Klaus Unger celebrates his 75th birthday today. He maintains a long and distinguished career in the field of porous materials and HPLC. He is the author of over 400 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has received over 55 patents.

Unger studied chemistry at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, where he also received his PhD and Habilitation. From 1977 to 2001, he was a professor in chemistry at the Johannes-Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany. After his retirement, from 2001 to 2009, he worked at the Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, as senior researcher in the field of bioseparation.

His research interests are the design and synthesis of porous materials as adsorbents and catalysts, surface functionalization and characterization, the development of liquid phase separation methods, and multidimensional liquid chromatography in proteomics.
