Angewandte Chemie 31/2011: More Nobility

Author: Angewandte Chemie International Edition

The series of Nobel lectures continues with Andre K. Geim and Kostya S. Novoselov, the 2010 laureates in physics, who report on their varying pathway to the discovery of graphene and its almost magic properties, such as strength, stability, and electrical conductivity. The Highlights deal with chemically modified organisms (C. G. Acevedo-Rocha and N. Budisa) and catalyst design for the steric and stereoelectronic control over polyolefin microstructure (L. R. Sita).

In the Communications section, K. Itami et al. describe the interconversion of alcohols and carbonyl compounds in a predictable and controlled fashion in one pot. X. Salvatella et al. show that disulfide bonds reduce the toxicity of amyloid fibrils. J. C. M. van Hest et al. succeeded in changing the shape of polymer vesicles composed of block copolymers with a glassy hydrophobic segment, even after self-assembly, by introducing plasticizing solvents (see picture).
