Peter Bruce, University of St. Andrews, Scotland, has received the Arfvedson Schlenk Prize. The prize was presented by the German Chemical Society (Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker, GDCh) at the Wissenschaftsforum in Bremen, Germany, in recognition of Bruce’s outstanding work in the area of lithium chemistry. The prize is sponsored by the GDCh and the company Chemetall, Frankfurt, Germany.

Bruce’s research interests include the synthesis and characterization of materials such as extended arrays and polymers with new properties or combinations of properties. In particular, he studies materials for new generations of energy conversion and storage devices. Recent efforts from his group have focussed on the synthesis and understanding of nanoelectrodes for lithium ion batteries, including nanowire/nanotube intercalation anodes and mesoporous cathodes. His article on a lithium-oxygen battery with ether-based electrolytes appeared in the latest issue of Angewandte Chemie.
