Professor Bernd Ondruschka celebrates his 65th birthday on July 28, 2012. Ondruschka is a well-respected chemist in the fields of technical and environmental chemistry. He is particularly known for his work on the use of ball-milling and microwaves to promote organic reactions.

Bernd Ondruschka studied chemistry and mathematics at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg, and the Karl-Marx-Universität (KMU), now the University of Leipzig, then both German Democratic Republic (GDR). He gained his diploma in theoretical chemistry in 1972 from KMU. From 1972–1977, he did postgraduate research at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR, based at the Central Institute of Organic Chemistry, Leipzig. Ondruschka obtained his first Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry in 1978 and a second in technical chemistry in 1989 from the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. He also completed his Habilitation there in 1992.

Ondruschka was appointed to his current position of Professor of Technical and Environmental Chemistry at the Friedrich-Schiller University, Jena, Germany, in 1997. He serves on the Editorial Board of Chemie Ingenieur Technik and is on the Board of Supporting Organizations for Chemical Engineering & Technology.
