Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. Reinhard Zellner, Germany, celebrates his 70th birthday on November 6, 2014.

Reinhard Zellner, born in Göttingen, Germany, in 1944, studied chemistry and physics at the University of Göttingen and received his PhD in physical chemistry there in 1971. He did postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge, UK, before returning to Göttingen as Senior Research Assistant. Zellner finished his habilitation in 1980, and was appointed as Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Göttingen in 1983, then at the University of Hanover, Germany, and in 1994, he joined the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, where he stayed until his retirement in 2013. He serves as member of the Senate of the University of Duisburg-Essen since 2004.

His research is focused on atmospheric chemistry, including the photochemistry and dynamics of atmospheric constituents, heterogeneous chemistry and microphysics of atmospheric aerosols, chemistry and climatic change, and interactions of nanoparticles with phase boundaries and biomolecules.

Reinhard Zellner has received a Heisenberg scholarship by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG), and the Literature Prize of the Chemical Industry Fund (Fonds der Chemischen Industrie, FCI) for his book “Chemie über den Wolken … und darunter” in 2012. His work on sustainable production and protection of the earth’s atmosphere has been honored with the 2014 DECHEMA Medal.

Zellner has been chairman or member of a large number of committees and expert panels concerning atmospheric environmental aspects, among them the Expert Committee “Globale Umweltaspekte” (Global Environmental Issues) of the German Ministry of Science (2000–2003) and the Expert Assessment Group on Atmospheric and Oceanografic Sciences of the DFG (since 2005).
