The chemist we are looking for has been involved in an important discovery that helped solve problems in diverse areas of science, not only in chemistry. The co-discoverer sadly died in a laboratory accident.
The scientist in question actually started out with a strong interest in the humanities, and a lot of musical talent, but chose chemistry for financial reasons during the Great Depression. Historic events and politics had a profund influence on our chemist, as he or she had to live with accusations of being a spy.
