In this issue, I. Manners et al. review synthetic two-dimensional functional materials. How can they be created from building blocks such as small molecules, nanoparticles, or block copolymers, and what applications are possible? In a Minireview, K. A. Jørgensen et al. discuss ten years of research on diarylprolinol silyl ethers; the Highlight by S. A. Ruider and N. Maulide deals with amides as synthetic modules.

In the Communications section, K. C. Hwang et al. describe a photoinduced copper-catalyzed regioselective synthesis of indoles by a three-component coupling (see picture). P. Michael and W. H. Binder present a mechanochemically triggered click catalyst. A.-H. Lui et al. show how Al2O3 nanosheets rich in pentacoordinate Al3+ ions stabilize Pt–Sn clusters for propane dehydrogenation, and W. Ribbe et al. succeeded in the combination of a nitrogenase scaffold and a synthetic compound into an artificial enzyme.
