Dr. habil. Serge Cosnier, University of Grenoble, France, has been awarded the Joseph-Achille Le Bel Prize 2015 by the Société Chimique de France (SCF, French Chemical Society). The prize recognizes a French chemist whose work is acclaimed on an international level and was presented during a ceremony on May 26, 2016, in Caen, France.
Dr. Cosnier is honored for his outstanding discoveries and their applications in the field of bioelectrochemistry. His research interests include molecular electrochemistry, electrochemical and optical biosensors, immunosensors and DNA sensors, conducting and redox polymers, biofuel cells and energy conversion, and bio-inspired and biomimetic electrodes.
Serge Cosnier received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the Paul Sabatier University of Toulouse, France, in 1982, and finished his habilitation in electrochemistry at Joseph Fourier University, Saint-Martin-d’Hères, France, in 1988. From 1989 to 1990, he was an Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany. He had joined the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) in 1983 as Associate Scientist and was promoted to Director of Research (Second Class) in 1997 and to Director of Research (First Class) in 2005. Dr. Cosnier also heads the Department of Molecular Chemistry at the Joseph Fourier University of Grenoble.
Among other honors, Dr. Cosnier has received the Katsumi Niki Prize for Bioelectrochemistry from the International Society of Electrochemistry in 2009, the CNRS Award for Scientific Excellence in 2001, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. He also was named a Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honor in France.
