New Aliphatic Isocyanate Technology

Author: ChemistryViews.org

Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) has introduced a technology for producing a new, biobased, aliphatic isocyanate as hardener for the coatings industry. 70 % of the carbon content of the aliphatic isocyanate, pentamethylene diisocyanate (PDI), comes from biomass without generating any direct competition for food production.

Commercial manufacturing is scheduled for 2016 with an annual capacity of up to 20,000 metric tons. These products will be manufactured in existing plants using energy-efficient gas-phase technology.
