Enhancing the Anti‐Solvatochromic Two‐Photon Fluorescence for Cirrhosis Imaging by Forming a Hydrogen‐Bond Network

Published: 22 May 2018

Author(s): Tian‐Bing Ren, Wang Xu, Qian‐Ling Zhang, Xing‐Xing Zhang, Si‐Yu Wen, Hai‐Bo Yi, Lin Yuan, Xiao‐Bing Zhang

Abstract Two‐photon imaging is an emerging tool for biomedical research and clinical diagnostics. Electron donor–acceptor (D–A) type molecules are the most widely employed two‐photon scaffolds. However, current D–A type fluorophores suffer from solvatochromic quenching in aqueous biological samples. To address this issue, we devised a novel class of D–A type green fluorescent protein (GFP) chromophore analogues that form a...

Copper‐Catalyzed Bora‐Acylation and Bora‐Alkoxyoxalylation of Allenes

Published: 22 May 2018

Author(s): Ayumi Sawada, Tetsuaki Fujihara, Yasushi Tsuji

Abstract Bora‐acylation of allenes proceeds in the presence of a copper catalyst using B2(pin)2 and carboxylic anhydrides as boron and acyl sources, respectively. The reaction selectively affords the corresponding β‐boryl‐β,γ‐unsaturated ketones in good‐to‐high yields. Bora‐alkoxyoxalylation of an allene is also achieved using oxalates.

Schisantherin A protects renal tubular epithelial cells from hypoxia/reoxygenation injury through the activation of PI3K/Akt signaling pathway

Published: 22 May 2018

Author(s): Jiachuan Gong, Xuezhen Wang

Abstract Schisantherin A (SchA), a dibenzocyclooctadiene lignan isolated from the fruit of Schisandra sphenanthera, was reported to possess anti‐inflammatory and antioxidant activities. However, its protective effect against renal ischemia‐reperfusion (I/R) injury in human renal tubular epithelial cells subjected to hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) has never been studied. Thus, herein, we investigated the effect of SchA on renal I/R injury...

Automated Buildup of Biomimetic Films in Cell Culture Microplates for High‐Throughput Screening of Cellular Behaviors

Published: 22 May 2018

Author(s): Paul Machillot, Catarina Quintal, Fabien Dalonneau, Loic Hermant, Pauline Monnot, Kelsey Matthews, Vincent Fitzpatrick, Jie Liu, Isabelle Pignot‐Paintrand, Catherine Picart

Abstract An automatic method is established for layer‐by‐layer (LbL) assembly of biomimetic coatings in cell culture microplates using a commercial liquid‐handling robot. Highly homogeneous thin films are formed at the bottom of each microwell. The LbL film‐coated microplates are compatible with common cellular assays, using microplate readers and automated microscopes. Cellular adhesion is screened on crosslinked and...

Programmed Shape‐Morphing Scaffolds Enabling Facile 3D Endothelialization

Published: 22 May 2018

Author(s): Qilong Zhao, Juan Wang, Huanqing Cui, Hongxu Chen, Yunlong Wang, Xuemin Du

Abstract Rapid formation of a confluent endothelial monolayer is the key to the success of small‐diameter vascular grafts, which is significantly important for treating dangerous and even sometimes deadly vascular disorders. However, the difficulty to homogenously locate endothelial cells onto the lumen of small‐diameter tubular scaffolds makes 3D endothelialization greatly challenging. Here, novel shape‐morphing scaffolds enabling...

Fumonisin B1 actuates oxidative stress‐associated colonic damage via apoptosis and autophagy activation in murine model

Published: 22 May 2018

Author(s): Sang Ho Kim, Mahendra Pal Singh, Chanchal Sharma, Sun Chul Kang

Abstract In the present study, we investigated the cytotoxic mechanism of Fumonisin B1 (FB1) in mice colonic region in a time course manner. Herein, after consecutive 4 days of exposure to FBI (2.5 mg/kg body weight), we observed disintegration of mice colon, as evidenced by histopathological analysis. FB1 significantly increased alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase activities in serum...

Perovskite Solar Cells with Inorganic Electron‐ and Hole‐Transport Layers Exhibiting Long‐Term (≈500 h) Stability at 85 °C under Continuous 1 Sun Illumination in Ambient Air

Published: 22 May 2018

Author(s): Seongrok Seo, Seonghwa Jeong, Changdeuck Bae, Nam‐Gyu Park, Hyunjung Shin

Abstract Despite the high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), poor long‐term stability is one of the main obstacles preventing their commercialization. Several approaches to enhance the stability of PSCs have been proposed. However, an accelerating stability test of PSCs at high temperature under the operating conditions in ambient air remains still to be demonstrated. Herein, interface‐engineered...

Metabolism within the tumor microenvironment and its implication on cancer progression: An ongoing therapeutic target

Published: 22 May 2018

Author(s): Ma Carmen Ocaña, Beatriz Martínez‐Poveda, Ana R. Quesada, Miguel Ángel Medina

Abstract Since reprogramming energy metabolism is considered a new hallmark of cancer, tumor metabolism is again in the spotlight of cancer research. Many studies have been carried out and many possible therapies have been developed in the last years. However, tumor cells are not alone. A series of extracellular components and stromal cells, such as endothelial cells, cancer‐associated fibroblasts, tumor‐associated macrophages, and...

Effects of antipsychotic drugs on neurites relevant to schizophrenia treatment

Published: 22 May 2018

Author(s): Xu‐Feng Huang, Xueqin Song

Abstract Although antipsychotic drugs are mainly used for treating schizophrenia, they are widely used for treating various psychiatric diseases in adults, the elderly, adolescents and even children. Today, about 1.2% of the worldwide population suffers from psychosis and related disorders, which translates to about 7.5 million subjects potentially targeted by antipsychotic drugs. Neurites project from the cell body of neurons and...
