Tuning a Protein‐Labeling Reaction to Achieve Highly Site Selective Lysine Conjugation

Published: 15 March 2018

Author(s): Grace H. Pham, Weijia Ou, Badry Bursulaya, Michael DiDonato, Ananda Herath, Yunho Jin, Xueshi Hao, Jon Loren, Glen Spraggon, Ansgar Brock, Tetsuo Uno, Bernhard H. Geierstanger, Susan E. Cellitti

Abstract Activated esters are widely used to label proteins at lysine side chains and N termini. These reagents are useful for labeling virtually any protein, but robust reactivity toward primary amines generally precludes site‐selective modification. In a unique case, fluorophenyl esters are shown to preferentially label human kappa antibodies at a single lysine (Lys188) within the light‐chain constant domain. Neighboring residues...

A Sulfonozanamivir Analogue Has Potent Anti‐influenza Virus Activity

Published: 15 March 2018

Author(s): Ádám Hadházi, Linghui Li, Benjamin Bailly, Andrea Maggioni, Gael Martin, Larissa Dirr, Jeffrey C. Dyason, Robin J. Thomson, George F. Gao, Anikó Borbás, Thomas Ve, Mauro Pascolutti, Mark von Itzstein

Abstract Influenza virus infection continues to cause significant, often severe, respiratory illness worldwide. A validated target for the development of anti‐influenza agents is the virus surface protein sialidase. In the current study, we have discovered a highly potent inhibitor of influenza virus sialidase, based on a novel sialosyl sulfonate template. The synthesised 3‐guanidino sialosyl α‐sulfonate, a sulfonozanamivir...

Serendipitous Observation of Liquid‐Phase Size Selectivity inside a Mesoporous Silica Nanoreactor in the Reaction of Chromene with Formic Acid

Published: 15 March 2018

Author(s): Paramita Das, Suman Ray, Piyali Bhanja, Asim Bhaumik, Chhanda Mukhopadhyay

Abstract An unprecedented product shape/size selectivity in the hydrolysis/decarboxylation reaction sequences of chromene with formic acid within MCM‐41 as a nanoreactor in the liquid phase is observed. Chromene is expected to form pyrimidine in the reaction with HCOOH. However, here, serendipitously, the product switches from pyrimidine to enol lactones and δ‐keto acids inside the nanoreactor. The shape/size selectivity in the liquid phase is...

Metal Catalysts for the Efficient Transformation of Biomass‐derived HMF and Furfural to Value Added Chemicals

Published: 15 March 2018

Author(s): Kavita Gupta, Rohit K. Rai, Sanjay K. Singh

Abstract Catalytic transformation of biomass‐derived compounds to different platform chemicals and liquid fuel is a prominent way to reduce the global dependence on fossil resources. In past few decades, biomass‐derived furans such as 2‐furfuraldehyde (furfural) and 5‐hydroxymethyl‐2‐furfural (HMF) have received outstanding attention because of their wide applications in the production of various industrially important value‐added...

Probing the Most Aromatic and Antiaromatic Pyrrolium Rings by Maximizing Hyperconjugation and Push–Pull Effect

Published: 15 March 2018

Author(s): Tingting Sun, Qiong Xie, Liang Zhao, Jun Zhu

Abstract Hyperconjugation, a weak interaction in organic chemistry, can have a strong effect on aromaticity, leading to the concept of hyperconjugative aromaticity, which was first proposed by Mulliken in 1939. However, most studies are limited to main group chemistry. Here we report the most aromatic and antiaromatic pyrrolium ring by maximizing the hyperconjugation caused by transition metal fragments and the push–pull effect. Our...

Ultrapermeable Nickel–Cobalt–Manganese/Alumina Inverse Opal as a Coke‐Tolerant and Pressure‐Drop‐Free Catalyst for the Dry Reforming of Methane

Published: 15 March 2018

Author(s): Won Yong Kim, Byung Jun Lee, Hunmin Park, Yo Han Choi, Ju Hun Kim, Jae Sung Lee

Abstract An inverse opal‐structured Ni‐Co‐Mn/Al2O3 catalyst with ultrahigh permeability was prepared by a sol–gel method templated by poly(methyl methacrylate) opal‐structured nanospheres. This catalyst exhibited excellent coke tolerance and a negligible reactor pressure drop in the dry reforming of methane. The highly permeable, unique macroporous structure allowed facile mass transport, which not only reduced the amount of coke...

Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals: Synthesis and Thermal Behavior of Optically Active, Three‐Ring Schiff Bases and Salicylaldimines

Published: 15 March 2018

Author(s): Bhyranalyar N. Veerabhadraswamy, Doddamane S. Shankar Rao, Channabasaveshwar V. Yelamaggad

Abstract The chiral ferroelectric smectic C* (SmC*) phase, characterized by a helical superstructure, has been well exploited in developing high‐resolution microdisplays that have been effectively employed in the fabrication of a wide varieties of portable devices. Although, an overwhelming number of optically active (chiral) liquid crystals (LCs) exhibiting a SmC* phase have been designed and synthesized, the search for new systems...

[C 6 H 14 N]PbBr 3 : An ABX 3 ‐Type Semiconducting Perovskite Hybrid with Above‐Room‐Temperature Phase Transition

Published: 15 March 2018

Author(s): Jing Zhang, Xitao Liu, Xianfeng Li, Shiguo Han, Kewen Tao, Yuyin Wang, Chengmin Ji, Zhihua Sun, Junhua Luo

Abstract Organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites, with the formula ABX3 (A=organic cation, B=metal cation, and X=halide; for example, CH3NH3PbI3), have diverse and intriguing physical properties, such as semiconduction, phase transitions, and optical properties. Herein, a new ABX3‐type semiconducting perovskite‐like hybrid, (hexamethyleneimine)PbBr3 (1), consisting of one‐dimensional inorganic frameworks and cyclic organic cations, is reported. Notably, the...

Roles of Amphipathicity and Hydrophobicity in the Micelle‐Driven Structural Switch of a 14‐mer Peptide Core from a Choline‐Binding Repeat

Published: 15 March 2018

Author(s): Héctor Zamora‐Carreras, Beatriz Maestro, Erik Strandberg, Anne S. Ulrich, Jesús M. Sanz, M. Ángeles Jiménez

Abstract Choline‐binding repeats (CBRs) are ubiquitous sequences with a β‐hairpin core that are found in the surface proteins of several microorganisms such as S. pneumoniae (pneumococcus). Previous studies on a 14‐mer CBR sequence derived from the pneumoccal LytA autolysin (LytA239–252 peptide) have demonstrated a switch behaviour for this peptide, so that it acquires a stable, native‐like β‐hairpin conformation in aqueous solution but is...

Ti‐Catalyzed Hydroamination for the Synthesis of Amine‐Containing π‐Conjugated Materials

Published: 15 March 2018

Author(s): Han Hao, Kyle A. Thompson, Zachary M. Hudson, Laurel L. Schafer

Abstract A series of conjugated enamines were prepared by Ti catalyzed anti‐Markovnikov hydroamination. The synthetic route is efficient with yields of up to 94 % and the 100 % atom efficiency of the reaction means that these products are easily isolated and purified. Due to the extended conjugated system, the enamine tautomers were observed exclusively in both solid and solution phases, as determined by X‐ray crystallography and...
