Catalytic [1,3] O‐to‐C Rearrangement: Rapid Access to Bridged Bicyclic Systems

Published: 19 April 2018

Author(s): Jiantao Zhang, Zhehui Liao, Lianfen Chen, Huanfeng Jiang, Shifa Zhu

Abstract A catalytic [1,3] O‐to‐C rearrangement from enyne‐ethers was developed for the rapid synthesis of diverse bridged bicyclic systems. In this reaction, a vinyl oxonium intermediate, generated in situ from enyne‐ether, was the precursor for the [1,3] O‐to‐C rearrangement. This versatile protocol represents the first example of catalytic [1,3] O‐to‐C rearrangement based on ring‐expansion strategy, enabling efficient access to...

Cross‐Linking/Mass Spectrometry for Studying Protein Structures and Protein–Protein Interactions: Where Are We Now and Where Should We Go from Here?

Published: 19 April 2018

Author(s): Andrea Sinz

Abstract Structural mass spectrometry (MS) is gaining increasing importance for deriving valuable three‐dimensional structural information on proteins and protein complexes, and it complements existing techniques, such as NMR spectroscopy and X‐ray crystallography. Structural MS unites different MS‐based techniques, such as hydrogen/deuterium exchange, native MS, ion‐mobility MS, protein footprinting, and chemical cross‐linking/MS,...

Synthesis of l ‐[4‐ 11 C]Asparagine by Ring‐Opening Nucleophilic 11 C‐Cyanation Reaction of a Chiral Cyclic Sulfamidate Precursor

Published: 19 April 2018

Author(s): Youwen Xu, Aylin Sibel Cankaya, Ruma Hoque, So Jeong Lee, Colleen Shea, Lena Kersting, Michael Schueller, Joanna S. Fowler, David Szalda, David Alexoff, Barbara Riehl, Tassilo Gleede, Richard A. Ferrieri, Wenchao Qu

Abstract The development of a convenient and rapid method to synthesize radiolabeled, enantiomerically pure amino acids (AAs) as potential positron emission tomography (PET) imaging agents for mapping various biochemical transformations in living organisms remains a challenge. This is especially true for the synthesis of carbon‐11‐labeled AAs given the short half‐life of carbon‐11 (11C, t1/2=20.4 min). A facile synthetic pathway to prepare...

Electronic Transmutation (ET): Chemically Turning One Element into Another

Published: 19 April 2018

Author(s): Xinxing Zhang, Katie A. Lundell, Jared K. Olson, Kit H. Bowen, Alexander I. Boldyrev

Abstract The concept of electronic transmutation (ET) depicts the processes that by acquiring an extra electron, an element with the atomic number Z begins to have properties that were known to only belong to its neighboring element with the atomic number Z+1. Based on ET, signature compounds and chemical bonds that are composed of certain elements can now be designed and formed by other electronically transmutated elements. This...

Atom‐Economic Silver‐Catalyzed Difunctionalization of the Isocyano Group with Cyclic Oximes: Towards Pyrimidinediones

Published: 19 April 2018

Author(s): Hong‐Wen Liang, Zhen Yang, Kun Jiang, Ying Ye, Ye Wei

Abstract An unprecedented silver‐catalyzed difunctionalization of the isocyano group with cyclic oximes is described. This method allows efficient and atom‐economic assembly of a vast array of structurally novel and interesting pyrimidinediones, and tolerates a range of functionalities. The resulting products can be easily converted into some useful compounds. Furthermore, the method can also be applied for the late‐stage...

Aluminium Chloride‐Mediated Synthesis of 1‐Chloro‐2,2,2‐Trifluoroethylidene‐Substituted Pyrrolidones

Published: 19 April 2018

Author(s): Zeng Wang, Zihang Yuan, Xiaoyan Han, Zhiqiang Weng

Abstract An aluminium chloride‐mediated cascade reaction between pyrrolidones and trifluoroacetic anhydride is reported. Functionally diverse 1‐chloro‐2,2,2‐trifluoroethylidene‐substituted pyrrolidones were obtained in moderate to high yields through electrophilic trifluoroacetylation, nucleophilic chlorination, and elimination. This procedure has a wide scope, good functional‐group tolerance and the reaction conditions are amenable...

An Industrial Perspective on Counter Anions in Gold Catalysis: Underestimated with Respect to “Ligand Effects”

Published: 19 April 2018

Author(s): Jasmin Schießl, Jürgen Schulmeister, Angelino Doppiu, Eileen Wörner, Matthias Rudolph, Ralf Karch, A. Stephen K. Hashmi

Abstract The conversion of a variety of well‐known test reactions, representing the key reactivity patterns of gold catalysis, were analyzed by GC and 1H NMR. The study is focused on establishing of a strategical approach for the consideration of ligand influence and counter anion influence during the catalyst optimization including an industrial perspective. The study shows a dominance of the counter anion, a dominance which up to...

Iridium‐Catalyzed Tandem Cyclization of Benzoylacetonitriles with Diazo Compounds Leading to Substituted Naphtho[1,8‐ bc ]pyrans by Sequential C−H Functionalization

Published: 19 April 2018

Author(s): Kelu Yan, Bin Li, Baiquan Wang

Abstract The cascade annulation reactions of benzoylacetonitriles with diazo compounds proceed efficiently in the presence of an iridium catalyst to give substituted naphtho[1,8‐bc]pyrans by sequential cleavage of C(sp2)−H/C(sp3)−H and C(sp2)−H/O−H bonds. Interestingly, the reactions involving cyclic diazo compounds and open‐chain diazo compounds lead to different types of naphtho[1,8‐bc]pyrans. Most products are obtained in moderate to good...

High‐Performance Thiol–Ene Composites Unveil a New Era of Adhesives Suited for Bone Repair

Published: 19 April 2018

Author(s): Viktor Granskog, Sandra García‐Gallego, Johanna von Kieseritzky, Jennifer Rosendahl, Patrik Stenlund, Yuning Zhang, Sarunas Petronis, Benny Lyvén, Marianne Arner, Joakim Håkansson, Michael Malkoch

Abstract The use of adhesives for fracture fixation can revolutionize the surgical procedures toward more personalized bone repairs. However, there are still no commercially available adhesive solutions mainly due to the lack of biocompatibility, poor adhesive strength, or inadequate fixation protocols. Here, a surgically realizable adhesive system capitalizing on visible light thiol–ene coupling chemistry is presented. The...
