Halogen Bond Catalyzed Bromocarbocyclization

Published: 23 February 2018

Author(s): Yuk‐Cheung Chan, Ying‐Yeung Yeung

Abstract A halogen bond catalyzed bromo‐carbocyclization of N‐cinnamyl sulfonamides and O‐cinnamyl phenyl ethers has been developed. N‐methyl 4‐iodopyridinium triflate is used as the halogen‐bonding organocatalyst and the reaction is highly chemoselective. This report represents the first proof‐of‐concept for halogen‐bonding organocatalyst‐promoted electrophilic halogenation. Mechanistic study suggests the autocatalytic nature of this...

Understanding the Unexpected Product Distribution in the Aerial Oxidation of Carbene‐Stabilized Diphosphorus Complex

Published: 23 February 2018

Author(s): Boyli Ghosh, Ambar Banerjee, Ankan Paul

Abstract Oxidation of nonmetallic singlet molecules by oxygen has its own share of intricacies. Herein, by means of DFT and ab initio techniques, mechanistic details of the aerial oxidation of an N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) stabilized diphosphorus complex are revealed. This particular oxidation process is known to produce an unexpected P−P bond containing diphosphorus tetroxide complex, instead of the more thermodynamically stable...

Transient‐Ligand‐Enabled ortho ‐Arylation of Five‐Membered Heterocycles: Facile Access to Mechanochromic Materials

Published: 23 February 2018

Author(s): Bijin Li, Kapileswar Seth, Ben Niu, Lei Pan, Huiwen Yang, Haibo Ge

Abstract Reported herein is the first example of a direct arylation of heteroarenes by a transient‐ligand‐directed strategy without the need to construct and deconstruct the directing group. A wide range of heteroarenes undergoes the coupling with diverse aryl iodides to assemble a large library of highly selective and functionalized 3‐arylthiophene‐2‐carbaldehydes. This route provides an opportunity to rapidly access new...

Water‐Assisted Size and Shape Control of CsPbBr 3 Perovskite Nanocrystals

Published: 23 February 2018

Author(s): Xiaoyu Zhang, Xue Bai, Hua Wu, Xiangtong Zhang, Chun Sun, Yu Zhang, Wei Zhang, Weitao Zheng, William W. Yu, Andrey L. Rogach

Abstract Lead‐halide perovskites are well known to decompose rapidly when exposed to polar solvents, such as water. Contrary to this common‐place observation, we have found that through introducing a suitable minor amount of water into the reaction mixture, we can synthesize stable CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. The size and the crystallinity, and as a result the band gap tunability of the strongly emitting CsPbBr3 nanocrystals correlate with the water...

Elucidation of the Oxygen Reduction Volcano in Alkaline Media using a Copper–Platinum(111) Alloy

Published: 23 February 2018

Author(s): Kim D. Jensen, Jakub Tymoczko, Jan Rossmeisl, Aliaksandr S. Bandarenka, Ib Chorkendorff, María Escudero‐Escribano, Ifan E. L. Stephens

Abstract The relationship between the binding of the reaction intermediates and oxygen reduction activity in alkaline media was experimentally explored. By introducing Cu into the 2nd surface layer of a Pt(111) single crystal, the surface reactivity was tuned. In both 0.1 m NaOH and 0.1 m KOH, the optimal catalyst should exhibit OH binding circa 0.1 eV weaker than Pt(111), via a Sabatier volcano; this observation suggests that the...

Amorphous Materials for Enhanced Localized Surface Plasmon Resonances

Published: 23 February 2018

Author(s): Chuanhui Zhu, Qun Xu

Abstract The discovery of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in semiconductor nanocrystals has initiated a new field in plasmonics. Plasmonic nanocrystals in particular have seen rapid development in recent years because they are a class of materials with unique photoelectronic properties. At present, a growing number of amorphous plasmonic materials has been steadily capturing scientific interest, though only a few of these...

Immune Checkpoint PD‐1/PD‐L1: Is There Life Beyond Antibodies?

Published: 23 February 2018

Author(s): Markella Konstantinidou, Tryfon Zarganes‐Tzitzikas, Katarzyna Magiera‐Mularz, Tad A. Holak, Alexander Dömling

Abstract The PD‐1/PD‐L1 interaction has emerged as a significant target in cancer immunotherapy. Current medications include monoclonal antibodies, which have shown impressive clinical results in the treatment of several types of tumors. The cocrystal structure of human PD‐1 and PD‐L1 is expected to be a valuable starting point for the design of novel inhibitors, along with the recent crystal structures with monoclonal antibodies,...

On the Action of General Anesthetics on Cellular Function: Barbiturate Alters the Exocytosis of Catecholamines in a Model Cell System

Published: 23 February 2018

Author(s): Daixin Ye, Andrew Ewing

Abstract General anesthetics are essential in many areas, however, the cellular mechanisms of anesthetic‐induced amnesia and unconsciousness are incompletely understood. Exocytosis is the main mechanism of signal transduction and neuronal communication through the release of chemical transmitters from vesicles to the extracellular environment. Here, we use disk electrodes placed on top of PC12 cells to show that treatment with...

Accurate Ionization Energies for Mononuclear Copper Complexes Remain a Challenge for Density Functional Theory

Published: 23 February 2018

Author(s): Büsra Dereli, Manuel A. Ortuño, Christopher J. Cramer

Abstract Copper is ubiquitous and its one‐electron redox chemistry is central to many catalytic processes. Modeling such chemistry requires electronic structure methods capable of the accurate prediction of ionization energies (IEs) for compounds including copper in different oxidation states and supported by various ligands. Herein, we estimate IEs for 12 mononuclear Cu species previously reported in the literature by using 21...

Fine Structure in Electronic Spectra of Cyanine Dyes: Are Sub‐Bands Largely Determined by a Dominant Vibration or a Collection of Singly Excited Vibrations?

Published: 23 February 2018

Author(s): Heinz Mustroph, Andrew Towns

Abstract This work critically examines attempts to model the fine structure apparent in electronic spectra of cyanine dyes and their analogues. Numerous computational studies reported over the past decade attribute the origin of sub‐bands and their relative intensities to vibronic transitions in which the relevant electronic transition is coupled, irrespective of symmetry, with a collection of vibrations. It is contended that this...
