Potential Therapeutic Applications of MnSODs and SOD‐Mimetics

Published: 12 December 2017

Author(s): Rosalin Bonetta

Abstract Natural as well as synthetic antioxidants are constantly being investigated for their efficiency in combatting the effects of oxidative stress, which appears to be the responsible cause of several diseases, including cancer, central nervous system disorders, ischaemia‐reperfusion disorders, cardiovascular conditions, and diabetes. Superoxide dismutases (SODs) constitute the ubiquitous antioxidant defences against oxidative...

Laccase‐Mediated Grafting on Biopolymers and Synthetic Polymers: A Critical Review

Published: 12 December 2017

Author(s): Sjoerd Slagman, Han Zuilhof, Maurice C. R. Franssen

Abstract Laccase‐mediated grafting on lignocelluloses has gained considerable attention as an environmentally benign method to covalently modify wood, paper and cork. In recent decades this technique has also been employed to modify fibres with a polysaccharide backbone, such as cellulose or chitosan, to infer colouration, antimicrobial activity or antioxidant activity to the material. The scope of this approach has been further...

Porphyrin‐Based Air‐Stable Helical Radicals

Published: 12 December 2017

Author(s): Kenichi Kato, Ko Furukawa, Tadashi Mori, Atsuhiro Osuka

Abstract Stable helical radicals are promising multi‐functional molecules in light of intriguing magnetic and chiroptical properties. Attempts were made to extend diphenylmethyl‐fused NiII porphyrin radical to helical system as the first air‐stable organic neutral helical radicals. Intramolecular Pd‐catalyzed twofold C−H arylation of methyl‐ or methoxy‐introduced meso‐diphenylmethyl NiII porphyrins gave a mixture of the target and rearranged...

In Situ Generated Ruthenium–Arene Catalyst for Photoactivated Ring‐Opening Metathesis Polymerization through Photolatent N‐Heterocyclic Carbene Ligand

Published: 12 December 2017

Author(s): Julien Pinaud, Thi Kim Hoang Trinh, David Sauvanier, Emeline Placet, Sriprapai Songsee, Patrick Lacroix‐Desmazes, Jean‐Michel Becht, Bassam Tarablsi, Jacques Lalevée, Loïc Pichavant, Valérie Héroguez, Abraham Chemtob

Abstract 1,3‐Bis(mesityl)imidazolium tetraphenylborate (IMesH+ BPh4−) can be synthesized in one step by anion metathesis between the corresponding imidazolium chloride and sodium tetraphenylborate. In the presence of 2‐isopropylthioxanthone (sensitizer), an IMes N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand can be photogenerated under irradiation at 365 nm through coupled electron/proton transfer reactions. By combining this tandem NHC photogenerator ...

Valence Localization at a Bio‐inspired Mixed‐Valent {Cu 2 S} 2+ Motif upon Solvation in Acetonitrile: Effect on Nitrous Oxide Reductase (N 2 Or) Activity

Published: 12 December 2017

Author(s): Charlène Esmieu, Maylis Orio, Jordan Mangue, Jacques Pécaut, Stéphane Ménage, Stéphane Torelli

Abstract We demonstrate, based on experimental and theoretical evidence, that the isolated [2(CH3CN)2]2+ complex prepared in CH3CN and containing a mixed‐valent {Cu2II,IS} core evolves towards a new [2(CH3CN)3]2+ species upon solvation in CH3CN. Unlike its type III structural analogue [2(H2O)(OTf)]+ active toward N2O reduction, this new type I compound is inactive. This outcome opens new perspectives for a rational for N2O activation using bio‐inspired Cu/S complexes,...

Flavin‐N5 Covalent Intermediate in a Nonredox Dehalogenation Reaction Catalyzed by an Atypical Flavoenzyme

Published: 12 December 2017

Author(s): Yumin Dai, Karina Kizjakina, Ashley C. Campbell, David A. Korasick, John J. Tanner, Pablo Sobrado

Abstract The flavin‐dependent enzyme 2‐haloacrylate hydratase (2‐HAH) catalyzes the conversion of 2‐chloroacrylate, a major component in the manufacture of acrylic polymers, to pyruvate. The enzyme was expressed in Escherichia coli, purified, and characterized. 2‐HAH was shown to be monomeric in solution and contained a non‐covalent, yet tightly bound, flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD). Although the catalyzed reaction was redox‐neutral, 2‐HAH...

Catalytic Upgrading of Ethanol to n ‐Butanol: Progress in Catalyst Development

Published: 12 December 2017

Author(s): Xianyuan Wu, Geqian Fang, Yuqin Tong, Dahao Jiang, Zhe Liang, Wenhua Leng, Liu Liu, Pengxiang Tu, Hongjing Wang, Jun Ni, Xiaonian Li

Abstract Because n‐butanol as a fuel additive has more advantageous physicochemical properties than those of ethanol, ethanol valorization to n‐butanol through homo‐ or heterogeneous catalysis has received much attention in recent decades in both scientific and industrial fields. Recent progress in catalyst development for upgrading ethanol to n‐butanol, which involves homogeneous catalysts, such as iridium and ruthenium complexes, and...

Molybdenum Doping Augments Platinum–Copper Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalyst

Published: 12 December 2017

Author(s): Yun Luo, Björn Kirchhoff, Donato Fantauzzi, Laura Calvillo, Luis Alberto Estudillo‐Wong, Gaetano Granozzi, Timo Jacob, Nicolas Alonso‐Vante

Abstract Improving the efficiency of Pt‐based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts while also reducing costs remains an important challenge in energy research. To this end, we synthesized highly stable and active carbon‐supported Mo‐doped PtCu (Mo‐PtCu/C) nanoparticles (NPs) from readily available precursors in a facile one‐pot reaction. Mo‐PtCu/C displays two‐to‐fourfold‐higher ORR half‐cell kinetics than reference PtCu/C and...

Inhibitors against Fungal Cell Wall Remodeling Enzymes

Published: 12 December 2017

Author(s): Ignacio Delso, Jessika Valero‐Gonzalez, Fernando Gomollón‐Bel, Jorge Castro‐López, Wenxia Fang, Iva Navratilova, Daan M. F. van Aalten, Tomás Tejero, Pedro Merino, Ramon Hurtado‐Guerrero

Abstract Fungal β‐1,3‐glucan glucanosyltransferases are glucan‐remodeling enzymes that play important roles in cell wall integrity, and are essential for the viability of pathogenic fungi and yeasts. As such, they are considered possible drug targets, although inhibitors of this class of enzymes have not yet been reported. Herein we report a multidisciplinary approach based on a structure‐guided design using a highly conserved...
