Professor Pedro J. Pérez, Center for Research in Sustainable Chemistry (CIQSO), Universidad de Huelva, Spain, has received the Medalla de Oro 2016 , the highest distinction of the Real Sociedad Española de Química (RSEQ, Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry).

The prize was presented during the RSEQ’s 2016 Awards Ceremony at the Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas (CIB, Biological Research Center) in Madrid, Spain, on November 10, 2016. It honors Pérez’ contributions to the fields of homogeneous catalysis and the activation of C–H bonds.

Pedro J. Pérez studied chemistry at the University of Sevilla, Spain, where he received his Ph.D. in 1991 under the supervision of Ernesto Carmona. After postdoctoral research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA, with Maurice Brookhart, he joined the Universidad de Huelva in 1997. In 2005, Pérez was promoted to Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the Universidad de Huelva. Since 2010, he is the Director of the Center for Research in Sustainable Chemistry (CIQSO).

Pérez’ research interests include the development of late transition-metal complexes as catalysts for transformations involving hydrocarbons, the selective cyclopropanation of olefins, the catalytic functionalization of unreactive alkanes, and novel reactions toward the synthesis of oxazoles, triazoles, and dihydropyridines.

Among other honors, Professor Pérez received the Inorganic Chemistry Award from RSEQ in 2007 and the Homogeneous Catalysis Award of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) in 2015. He is a Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Spain and a Fellow of the RSC.
