60th Birthday: Thomas Bley

On March 1st, Thomas Bley celebrates his 60th birthday. Bley is Editor-in-Chief of the Wiley journal Engineering in Life Sciences and a member of the DECHEMA task force “Measurement and Controlling in Biotechnology”.

Bley studied mathematics at the Technischen Universität Dresden, Germany, before moving to Institute of Biotechnology at the Academy of Science of the GDR (German Democratic Republic) in Leipzig. His work focused on biosignals and biotechnology and in 1996 he was made Professor of Bioprocess Engineering at the Technischen Universität Dresden.

His current research concerns the modeling and controlling of bioprocesses, biocatalysis in heterogeneous systems, plant cells in bioreactors along with his ongoing interests in white biotechnology, biomonitoring and biosignaling.
