David Cole-Hamilton, University of St. Andrews, UK, and Xinhe Bao, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, China, have been awarded the Alwin Mittasch Prize 2017, sponsored by BASF SE and awarded by DECHEMA e.V. (Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology) and the German Society for Catalysis (GeCatS).

The prize is awarded for distinguished work that has not only extended the fundamentals of catalysis, but also has applications in industry. The award includes 10,000 EUR of prize money and was presented at the 50th Annual Meeting of German Catalysis Scientists in Weimar, Germany, on March 16, 2017.

David Cole-Hamilton is honored for his pioneering work aimed at a better understanding of molecular catalysis and its industrial application. Xinhe Bao receives the award for his contributions to the development of novel catalysis concepts for methane and syngas conversion.

David Cole-Hamilton
studied chemistry at Edinburgh University, UK, where he received his Ph.D. in 1975. After post-doctoral research at Imperial College, London, UK, he was Lecturer at the University of Liverpool, UK, from 1978 to 1983 and Senior Lecturer from 1983 to 1985. He then was appointed Irvine Professor for Chemistry at the University of St. Andrews in 1985, where he remained until his retirement in 2015.

Professor Cole-Hamilton's research is focused on organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis. He has developed selective carbonylation reactions and multiphase reactions with a special emphasis on industrial applications. Among other honors, Cole-Hamilton has received the Corday Morgan Medal and Prize of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) in 1983, the RSC Industrial Award for Organometallic Chemistry sponsored by Monsanto in 1998, and the Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson Prize Lectureship of the RSC in 2005/2006.

Xinhe Bao
studied chemistry at Fudan University, Shanghai, China, where he received his Ph.D. in 1987. From
1989 to 1991, he was an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society, Berlin, Germany,  where he then worked as a Guest Scientist until 1995. He was appointed Professor in the State Key Laboratory of Catalysis at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics in 1995.

Professor Bao's research interests include surface chemistry and catalysis, e.g., the activation and conversion of methane, the selective oxidation of hydrocarbons, the conversion of coal-based syngas, and fuel cell-related catalysis. Among other honors, Bao has received the Award in Basic Science from the Zhou Guang Zhao Foundation in 2015, the Outstanding Science and Technology Achievement Prize of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2015, and the International Award for Excellence in Natural Gas Conversion in 2016.
