In this week’s Review, M. Haase and H. Schäfer discuss nanoparticles for upconversion. How can highly efficient particles with narrow size distribution be synthesized that absorb long-wavelength photons in solution and emit short-wavelength radiation? The Highlights deal with bifunctional iron catalysts for ketone hydrogenation (G. Bauer and K. A. Kircher), disruption of histone readers (S. S. Oliver and J. M. Denu), and polymer design based on a single chromophore (P. Theato).

In the Communications section, B. L. Feringa et al. present a method for the catalytic asymmetric addition and oxidative dearomatization that leads to multifunctional spiro compounds. A. Stroppa et al. describe the electric control of magnetization and interplay between orbital ordering and ferroelectricity in a multiferroic metal–organic framework (see picture). G. Nie et al. demonstrate that the cytotoxicity of CdTe quantum dots depends on the chirality of their glutathione coating.
