Dr. Barbara Elvers, former Editor-in-Chief and current Senior Editorial Advisor of Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, celebrates her 70th birthday on November 4, 2020.


Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry is the benchmark reference in applied chemistry, industrial chemistry, and chemical engineering. The encyclopedia was first published in 1914 by Professor Fritz Ullmann in Berlin, Germany, and the first English edition appeared in 1985. In its seventh edition, it comprises over 30,000 pages, almost 15,000 tables, and 25,000 figures.


Barbara Elvers studied chemistry at the University of Hamburg, Germany, where she received her Ph.D. for work on carbohydrate chemistry in 1978. After working on a research project in biochemistry at the University Hospital in Hamburg, she joined SRI (formerly Stanford Research Institute), Palo Alto, USA, in 1980, where she was employed as a Visiting Scientist in the life science department. She became Editor for Ullmann's Encyclopedia at Wiley-VCH in 1987, and was Editor-in-Chief of the encyclopedia starting in 2010, as well as Editor of the journal Starch/Stärke in 1999–2009.
