The chemist we are looking for is one of the major pioneers in the study of photosynthesis. He showed that plants use sunlight to convert the CO2 absorbed from the environment into carbon compounds during photosynthesis, and that they absorb mineral substances from the soil.
At the age of 20, he confirmed Boyle's law by a new method during an ascent of Mont Blanc. In one of his numerous other studies, he investigated anethole or anise camphor, an aromatic compound found in anise and fennel.
