Stefan Berger turns 65 today. Berger is a professor for structural analytics at the University of Leipzig, Germany, where he develops methodology and applications of NMR. In addition to his many publications, he has written and edited several books on NMR including 100/150/200 and More NMR Experiments, 13C NMR Spectroscopy, and Classics in Spectroscopy. Classics in Spectroscpoy combines full spectroscopic details of natural products with stories about their history, discovery and culture. Berger received the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie’s Literature Prize for this book in 2009, an award that recognizes authors of outstanding chemistry books.

Berger studied chemistry at the University of Tübingen, Germany, where he also completed his Ph.D. under the supervision of Anton Rieker. He joined J. D. Robert’s group, California Institute of Technology, USA, for a post-doctoral position, then returned to Germany for his Habilitation at the University of Marburg. He joined the faculty at the University of Leipzig in 1997, and has since studied the development of new pulse sequences including selective pulses for structural elucidation as well as protein structures and protein ligand interactions.
