Professor George Sheldrick, University of Göttingen, Germany, celebrates his 70th birthday on November 17, 2012. Sheldrick is a well-respected chemist in the area of structural chemistry. His research focuses on experimentally and computationally determining crystal structures of both small molecules and macromolecules by X-ray diffraction. In particular, he has developed the SHELX series of programs for refining structures.

George Sheldrick gained his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, UK, in 1966 on NMR spectroscopy of inorganic hydrides. From 1966–1978, he was a Lecturer and Fellow of Jesus College, University of Cambridge. In 1978, he moved to the University of Göttingen, Germany, to take up a position as full professor. He remained at Göttingen until his retirement in 2011 and remains an active researcher and Niedersachsen Professor (emeritus) at the university.
