In this issue, H. H. Gorris and O. S. Wolfbeis discuss the properties of photon-upconverting nanoparticles. How can they be used in optical encoding and multiplexing of cells, biomolecules, and microspheres? In a Minireview, H. Braunschweig and R. D. Dewhurst summarize methods for the formation of electron-precise boron–boron bonds. The Highlights deal with self-assembling enzyme networks (U. Schröder) and a free-radical approach to the formation of bonds between fluorine and sp3-hybridized carbon centers (M. P. Sibi and Y. Landais).

In the Communications section, A. H. E. Müller et al. present Janus micelles that act as efficient dispersants for carbon nanotubes. T. Martín et al. succeeded in the total synthesis of teurilene by using a cascade of epoxide-openings triggered by a Nicholas reaction. D. Wang et al. describe a method for the generation of chains of differently sized nanoparticles.
