In this issue's Review, C.-H. Leung et al. summarize recent examples of biologically active luminescent metal complexes. What is the potential of luminescent metal-based therapeutics for the investigation and treatment of diseases? S. J. Danishefsky et al. discuss the pathway to the total synthesis of a homogeneous erythropoietin in a Minireview. The Highlights deal with nanofluidics for giant power harvesting (L. Zhang and X. Chen) and a greener approach to N-heterocyclic compounds (M. Beller et al.). C. Feldmann points out the vast undiscovered realm of metastable solids in an Editorial, and Janine Cossy answers questions by N. Maulide in an Author Profile.

In the Communications section, Y. T. Lim et al. present a mucosal vaccine system based on nanomicelles and viral antigens, which can be administered through the nose (see picture). G. R. Newkome et al. succeeded in the preparation of a bicycle-like wheel through the self-assembly of terpyridene derivatives. A mild Stadler-Ziegler process for C–S bond formation in a photoredox-catalyzed one-pot protocol is presented by T. Noel et al.
