This week, L. J. Williams et al. review heterolytic C–C fragmentation reactions, of which Eschenmoser and Frey discovered the archetype 60 years ago. What new reactions and variants of the original have been revealed and applied? In a Minireview, M. S. Sigman et al. describe the opposite: C–C bond forming reactions, namely of ethylene, catalyzed by transition metals. The Highlight by J. M. Gottfried deals with tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

In the Communications section, K. Domen et al. present a simple method for the preparation of core/shell photocatalysts with spatially separated co-catalysts for efficient water splitting (see picture). R. M. A. Hereen et al. succeeded in enhancing the detection of high-mass proteins in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer by applying an active pixel detector with high charge sensitivity. J. Bai et al. show how to form a metal–organic framework with a high surface area by breaking edges off cuboctahedra cages. S. Erbas-Cakmak and E. U. Akkaya present molecular logic gates concatenated to form a self-reporting and activatable photosensitizer.
