Luis Oro, University of Zaragoza, Spain, and former EuCheMS president, celebrates his 70th birthday on June 13, 2015.

Professor Oro’s main research interest is the organometallic chemistry of platinum group metals, covering synthesis, reaction mechanisms, and homogeneous catalysis.

Luis Oro obtained his Ph.D. in 1970 from the University of Zaragoza, Spain. He carried out postdoctoral studies at Cambridge University, UK, from 1972 to 1973. He has served on the faculties of the Universities of Zaragoza, Madrid Complutense, and Santander, Spain, and became Full Professor of Inorganic Chemistry in Zaragoza in 1982.

Among many other honors, Luis Oro has received the EuCheMS Award for Service in 2014, the Research Prize and Medal of the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry in 2007, the Sacconi Medal in 2003, and the Humboldt Research Award in 1995.

He has been a member of the editorial board of several scientific publications dealing with inorganic and organometallic chemistry. He is Chairman of the Editorial Board of ChemCatChem and President of the ChemPubSoc Europe partnership for the European Journals of Inorganic (EurJIC) and Organic Chemistry (EurJOC), as well as ChemCatChem. He has also served in high level positions in the Spanish science administration and as vice-president of the European Science Foundation (ESF). From 2008 to 2011, he was the President of the European Association for Chemistry and Molecular Sciences (EuCheMS).
