Professor Carsten Bolm, Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen, Germany, has been awarded the Adolf von Baeyer Memorial Medal by the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCH, German Chemical Society). The prize recognizes outstanding achievements in the field of organic chemistry. It was presented at the GDCh Wissenschaftsforum 2015 in Dresden, Germany, on August 30, 2015.

Professor Bolm is honored for his contributions to transition-metal catalyzed asymmetric synthesis and his large body of work pointing the way for future developments in organic chemistry. His research interests include enantioselective catalysis, bioactive compounds, mechanochemistry, biomass conversion, as well as sulfur and fluorine chemistry. He conducts research on the exploitation of lignin within the excellence cluster “Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass”.

Carsten Bolm studied chemistry at the Technische Universität Braunschweig, Germany, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Madison, WI, USA. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Marburg, Germany, under the supervision of Manfred Reetz in 1987. After postdoctoral work with Barry Sharpless at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, MA, USA, he carried out his habilitation with Bernd Giese at the Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany, and the University of Basel, Switzerland. Bolm became Associate Professor at the University of Marburg, Germany, in 1993, and Professor of Organic Chemistry at RWTH Aachen in 1996.

Among other honors, Professor Bolm has received the Heinz-Meier-Leibnitz-award by the Federal Secretary for Education and Science, Germany, in 1991, the the Otto Klung Award 1996, and the Prix Franco-Allemand (French-German Prize) by the Société Chimique de France (SCF, French Chemical Society) in 2006. He is on the Academic Advisory Board of Advanced Synthesis & Catalysis.
