Chemicals Safety and Regulations

Author: ChemViews

To celebrate the 5th anniversary of ChemistryViews.org, for five months (June – October) we highlight great pieces of content from the archives along with newly created features. For this last entry, we focus on the safe use of chemicals and regulatory issues.

The European REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) regulation aims to ensure a high level of protection for human health and environment. Companies manufacturing or importing chemical substances into the EU are required to register these with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki, Finland. According to REACH, manufacturers, importers, and downstream users are responsible for the safe use of their chemicals.

REACH entered into force in June 2006; registration started in 2008. Since then, a lot has been achieved, but challenges remain and with every new registration deadline new ones appear. ECHA and the companies involved keep discussing on what is working, what is not, and how aligned the stakeholders are in their ambitions for sound chemicals management.
