In this week’s Review, T. Bach and J. P. Hehn ask how photochemical reactions can be useful as key steps in natural product syntheses. How can complex carbon skeletons be obtained by light? The Highlights deal with the selective epitaxial growth of silver nanoplates (Y. Wang and J. Fang), allylic alcohols as sustainable sources for catalytic alkylations (M. Bandini), and solid nanoporous organic cages (A. I. Cooper).

In the Communications section, G. Sczakiel et al. describe the specific recognition of proteins by array-bound hexanucleotides. A. Togni et al. present a method for the direct electrophilic trifluoromethylation of nitrogen atoms. D. Kosumi et al. succeeded in measuring ultrafast energy transfer in the photosynthetic antennae of purple bacteria by means of femtosecond spectroscopy. M. Osawa et al. describe the role of bridge-bonded formate ions in the electrocatalytic oxidation of formic acid on platinum (see picture).
