Shin-Etsu Chemical will establish a new rare-earth magnet manufacturing plant in the Hai Phong Province, Vietnam. The construction work will start in October 2014. A first phase is scheduled to be completed in September 2015. It’s manufacturing capacity will be 1,000 metric tons per year (m.t./yr). The second phase will be completed in September 2016. The total investment is about ¥12 billion (EUR 85 million; $117 million).
The rare-earth magnet manufacturing process is divided into the key processes of sintering and of machining. So far, Shin-Etsu’s Takefu Plant in Fukui Prefecture, Japan, was its only site that carried out the sintering process. The new plant will have a similar set up for the sintering process to the one at the Takefu Plant. With the construction of the new plant, the total production capacity for the sintering process will increase by about 1.5 times.
