Flexible energy storage devices are gaining increasing attention owing to the emergence of unique applications such as stretchable electronics, collapsible displays, and wearable electronics. This requires electrodes with superior electrochemical properties, such as high power density, good cycling stability, and excellent reversibility, but also high mechanical strength. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) electrodes are used as electrodes for such supercapacitor applications as the exfoliation of rGO improves the electrolyte ions interaction.

Pooi See Lee, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and colleagues synthesized a Vanadium-oxide rGO (VGO) electrode, where the abundant oxygen functional groups in GO act as anchoring sites for the growth of V2O5 on rGO sheets. This VGO electrode is flexible and demonstrates good mechanical properties, as well as excellent capacitive behavior. By forming the VGO composite, the rGO helps to alleviate the conductivity issues, allowing higher mass loading, improved stability, and better reversibility. The functionality of the VGO electrode is demonstrated by good functionality in the bent state, as well as by the ability to eilluminate commercial LED devices.
