The LEGO Group has announced an investment of DKK 1 billion (EUR 130 million) dedicated to research, development and implementation of new, sustainable, raw materials to manufacture LEGO^® elements as well as packaging materials. With this, they will establish the LEGO Sustainable Materials Centre during 2015 and 2016 and plan to recruit more than 100 additional employees. The center will also collaborate and develop partnerships with relevant external stakeholders and experts.

Factors such as the composition of the material, how it is sourced, and what happens when the product reaches the end of its life will be considered when searching for new, sustainable alternatives to current raw materials.
