ABB has signed a three-year agreement for the supply of vacuum cast coil dry-type distribution transformers with power ratings of up to 12,000 kilovolt-amperes (kVA) to replace existing ones at CERN to power the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, one of the world’s largest centers for scientific research located near Geneva in Switzerland, has just started operating the LHC at the frontier of high energy particle physics.

ABB’s EcoDry99plus is part of a family of ultra-efficient distribution transformers and meets CERN’s stringent efficiency and environmental requirements. They minimize losses by offering over 99 % efficiency, which translates to a saving of 33,000 kWh per year for every 1000 kVA transformer operating at full load. This is equivalent to the average power consumption of ten standard households.
