Wax is thermally decomposed in the hot parts of the dark zone I of a candle flame. Here no oxygen is available. In the first reaction step, Cā€“C bonds break to produce pairs of hydrocarbon radicals. Overall a variety of reactions takes place, leading to a mixture of smaller, unsaturated aliphatic, alicyclic, and aromatic hydrocarbons.
