Aqueous Co‐Solvent in Zwitterionic‐based Protic Ionic Liquids as Electrolytes in 2.0 V Supercapacitors

Published: 01 October 2020

Author(s): Xuejun Lu, José Manuel Vicent‐Luna, Sofia Calero, María J. Roldán‐Ruiz, Ricardo Jiménez, M. Luisa Ferrer, María C. Gutiérrez, Francisco Monte

Abstract High‐performance energy‐storage devices are receiving great interest in sustainable terms as a required complement to renewable energy sources to level out the imbalances between supply and demand. Besides electrode optimization, a primary objective is also the judicious design of high‐performance electrolytes combining novel ionic liquids (ILs) and mixtures of aqueous solvents capable of offering “à la carte” properties. Herein, it is described the stoichiometric addition of a...

Cyclotide Structures Revealed by NMR, with a Little Help from X‐ray Crystallography

Published: 01 October 2020

Author(s): Thomas N. G. Handley, Conan K. Wang, Peta J. Harvey, Nicole Lawrence, David J. Craik

Abstract This review highlights the predominant role that NMR has had in determining the structures of cyclotides, a fascinating class of macrocyclic peptides found in plants. Cyclotides contain a cystine knot, a compact structural motif that is constrained by three disulfide bonds and able to resist chemical and biological degradation. Their resistance to proteolytic degradation has made cyclotides appealing as drug leads. Herein, we examine the developments that led to the identification and...

Building N‐Heterocyclic Carbene into Triazine‐Linked Polymer for Multiple CO2 Utilization

Published: 01 October 2020

Author(s): Chengtao Yue, Wenlong Wang, Fuwei Li

Abstract The development of new CO2 detection technologies and CO2 “capture‐conversion” materials is of great significance due to the growing environmental crisis. Here, multifunctional triazine‐linked polymers with built‐in N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) sites (designated as NHC‐triazine@polymer) are presented for simultaneous CO2 detection, capture, activation, and catalytic conversion. NHC‐triazine@polymer were readily obtained through polymerization of cyanophenyl‐substituted NHC. The...

CheKiPEUQ Intro 1: Bayesian Parameter Estimation Considering Uncertainty or Error from both Experiments and Theory

Published: 01 October 2020

Author(s): Aditya Savara, Eric A. Walker

Abstract A common goal is extraction of physico‐chemical parameter values such as pre‐exponentials and activation energies from experiment. Ever increasing knowledge from experiments and computations is enabling semi‐quantitative prior predictions of such values. When prior knowledge of physically realistic ranges is available, a method named Bayesian parameter estimation (BPE) enables more physically realistic parameter estimation relative to unsophisticated fitting by seeking the most...

Operando Isotopic Exchange in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells: Oxygen‐Transport Dependency on Applied Potential

Published: 01 October 2020

Author(s): Alexandre Nau, Clément Comminges, Nicolas Bion

Abstract The oxygen isotopic exchange technique is a powerful tool to investigate the oxygen transport kinetics in an oxide solid. In a solid oxide fuel cell, isotopic surface exchange and diffusion coefficients are classically determined by using the Isotopic Exchange Depth Profiling method followed by ex situ SIMS characterizations. Despite its relevance, the utilization of in situ or operando techniques to measure the isotopic exchange under an electrical bias remains marginal. We developed...

Synergistic and Diminutive Effects between Regium and Aerogen Bonds

Published: 01 October 2020

Author(s): Ruijing Wang, Zheng Wang, Xuefang Yu, Qingzhong Li

Abstract The aerogen bond is formed in complexes of HCN−XeF2O and C2H4−XeF2O. The lone pair on the N atom of HCN is a better electron donor in the aerogen bond than the π electron on the C=C bond of C2H4. The coinage substitution strengthens the aerogen bond in MCN−XeF2O (M=Cu, Ag, and Au) and its enhancing effect becomes larger in the Au

Stronger Together: Multivalent Phage Capsids Inhibit Virus Entry

Published: 01 October 2020

Author(s): Iván Gallego, Irene Lostalé‐Seijo, Javier Montenegro

Abstract Antivirals are now more important than ever. To efficiently inhibit virus replication, antiviral multivalent strategies need sufficient affinity to overcome the excellent matching between the virus and its receptor. This report highlights a phage capsid scaffold strategy that can be used to precisely position sialic acid moieties to inhibit influenza A virus replication.

Catalytic Asymmetric Intermolecular Radical Aminotrifluoromethylation of Alkenes with Hydrazines by Cu(I)/CPA Cooperative Catalysis

Published: 01 October 2020

Author(s): Zhe Wang, Jiang‐Tao Cheng, Zhichao Shi, Na Wang, Feng Zhan, Sheng‐Peng Jiang, Jin‐Shun Lin, Yuyang Jiang, Xin‐Yuan Liu

Abstract A first catalytic enantioselective intermolecular radical aminotrifluoromethylation of alkene with hydrazine and Togni's reagent by Cu(I)/CPA cooperative catalysis has been reported, accessing diversely substituted CF3‐containing enantioenriched diarylmethylamines bearing an α‐tertiary stereocenter with high enantioselectivity and excellent chemoselectivity. The highly asymmetric induction of C−N bond formation between hydrazine and the carbocation intermediate was achieved by using a...

Breast Cancer Stem Cell Potency of Nickel(II)‐Polypyridyl Complexes Containing Non‐steroidal Anti‐inflammatory Drugs

Published: 01 October 2020

Author(s): Kogularamanan Suntharalingam, Zhiyin Xiao, Alice Johnson, Catherine J. Feld

Abstract We report the breast cancer stem cell (CSC) potency of two nickel(II)‐3,4,7,8‐tetramethyl‐1,10‐phenanthroline complexes, 1 and 3, containing the non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), naproxen and indomethacin, respectively. The nickel(II) complexes, 1 and 3 kill breast CSCs and bulk breast cancer cells in the micromolar range. Notably, 1 and 3 display comparable or better potency towards breast CSCs than salinomycin, an established CSC‐active agent. The complexes, 1 and 3...

Towards More Photostable, Brighter, and Less Phototoxic Chromophores: Synthesis and Properties of Porphyrins Functionalized with Cyclooctatetraene

Published: 01 October 2020

Author(s): Jakub Ostapko, Aleksander Gorski, Joanna Buczyńska, Barbara Golec, Krzysztof Nawara, Anastasiia Kharchenko, Arkadiusz Listkowski, Magdalena Ceborska, Mariusz Pietrzak, Jacek Waluk

Abstract Free base and zinc porphyrins functionalized with cyclooctatetraene (COT), a molecule known as a good triplet‐state quencher, have been obtained and characterized in detail by structural, spectral, and photophysical techniques. Substitution with COT leads to a dramatic decrease of the intrinsic lifetime of the porphyrin triplet. As a result, photostability in oxygen‐free solution increases by two to three orders of magnitude. In non‐degassed solutions, improvement of photostability is...
