Field exposure of FeCrAl model alloys in a waste‐fired boiler at 600°C: The influence of Cr and Si on the corrosion behaviour

Published: 23 April 2019

Author(s): Johan Eklund, Maria Dolores Paz, Bo Jönsson, Jesper Liske, Jan‐Erik Svensson, Torbjörn Jonsson

Abstract The aim of this study was to examine the performance of FeCrAl model alloys in a waste‐fired boiler and investigate the influence of chromium and silicon content on the corrosion behaviour. The investigation was executed by utilising an air‐cooled probe, giving a material temperature of 600°C throughout a 672 hr exposure. The material loss measurements were performed by utilizing an ultrasonic thickness gauge in combination with scanning electron microscopy analysis. It was found that...

The life cycles of two species of Myxomycetes in Physarales, Physarum rigidum and Didymium squamulosum

Published: 23 April 2019

Author(s): Xiangyang Zhu, Odeshnee Moodley, Qi Wang, Yu Li

Abstract Myxomycetes are eukaryotic microorganisms containing characteristics akin to both fungi and amoebae. They can complete their whole life cycles while being cultured on agar media, and under‐laboratory conditions, which favors taxonomic, phylogenetic, and cytological researches. Here, we describe the life cycles of two such species: Didymium squamulosum collected from the field and Physarum rigidum cultured from moist chamber both belonging to the Order Physarales. Three per cent...

Antileismanial activity, mechanism of action study and molecular docking of 1,4‐bis(substituted benzalhydrazino)phthalazines

Published: 23 April 2019

Author(s): Angel H. Romero, Noris Rodríguez, Henry Oviedo, Simón E. Lopez

Abstract To identify new agents for the treatment of American cutaneous leishmaniasis, a series of eight 1,4‐bis(substituted benzalhydrazino)phthalazines was evaluated against Leishmania braziliensis and Leishmania mexicana parasites. These compounds represent a disubstituted version of the 1‐chloro‐4‐(monoaryl/heteroarylhydranizyl)phthalazine that exhibited a significant response against L. braziliensis according to our previous findings. Two disubstituted phthalazines 3b and 3f were...

Trichoderma–Azotobacter biofilm inoculation improves soil nutrient availability and plant growth in wheat and cotton

Published: 23 April 2019

Author(s): Kulandaivelu Velmourougane, Radha Prasanna, Gautam Chawla, Lata Nain, Arun Kumar, Anil Kumar Saxena

Abstract Microbial biofilms are gaining importance in agriculture, due to their multifaceted agronomic benefits and resilience to environmental fluctuations. This study focuses on comparing the influence of single inoculation—Azotobacter chroococcum (Az) or Trichoderma viride (Tv) and their biofilm (Tv–Az), on soil and plant metabolic activities in wheat and cotton grown under Phytotron conditions. Tv–Az proved superior to all the other treatments in terms of better colonisation, plant growth...

Chemical, Structural, and Electronic Aspects of Formation and Degradation Behavior on Different Length Scales of Ni‐Rich NCM and Li‐Rich HE‐NCM Cathode Materials in Li‐Ion Batteries

Published: 23 April 2019

Author(s): Lea de Biasi, Björn Schwarz, Torsten Brezesinski, Pascal Hartmann, Jürgen Janek, Helmut Ehrenberg

Abstract In order to satisfy the energy demands of the electromobility market, both Ni‐rich and Li‐rich layered oxides of NCM type are receiving much attention as high‐energy‐density cathode materials for application in Li‐ion batteries. However, due to different stability issues, their longevity is limited. During formation and continuous cycling, especially the electronic and crystal structure suffers from various changes, eventually leading to fatigue and mechanical degradation. In recent...

Sesquiterpenoid Compounds from Curcuma kwangsiensis

Published: 23 April 2019

Author(s): Hai‐Bing Liao, Wu‐Ying Feng, Heng‐Shan Wang, Dong Liang

Abstract Two previously undescribed guaiane‐type sesquiterpenes (1 and 2), a pair of new salvialane‐type sesquiterpenes (3a and 3b), together with 11 known compounds were isolated and purified from the rhizomes of Curcuma kwangsiensis. Their structures were elucidated by the extensive spectroscopic data (1D‐ and 2D‐NMR) analysis. All the isolated compounds were assessed for their anti‐neuroinflammatory activity by inhibiting the nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide...

Continuous Solvent/Detergent Virus Inactivation Using a Packed‐Bed Reactor

Published: 23 April 2019

Author(s): Duarte L. Martins, Jure Sencar, Nikolaus Hammerschmidt, Björn Tille, Johanna Kinderman, Thomas R. Kreil, Alois Jungbauer

Continuous virus inactivation (VI) remains one of the missing pieces while the biopharma industry moves toward continuous manufacturing. The challenges of adapting VI to the continuous operation are two‐fold: 1) achieving fluid homogeneity and 2) a narrow residence time distribution (RTD) for fluid incubation. To address these challenges, a dynamic active in‐line mixer and a packed‐bed continuous virus inactivation reactor (CVIR) are implemented, which act as a narrow RTD incubation chamber....

Inorganic and Layered Perovskites for Optoelectronic Devices

Published: 23 April 2019

Author(s): Azhar Fakharuddin, Umair Shabbir, Weiming Qiu, Tahir Iqbal, Muhammad Sultan, Paul Heremans, Lukas Schmidt‐Mende

Abstract Organic–inorganic halide perovskites are making breakthroughs in a range of optoelectronic devices. Reports of 23% certified power conversion efficiency in photovoltaic devices, external quantum efficiency 21% in light‐emitting diodes (LEDs), continuous‐wave lasing and ultralow lasing thresholds in optically pumped lasers, and detectivity in photodetectors on a par with commercial GaAs rivals are being witnessed, making them the fastest ever emerging material technology. Still,...

Published: 23 April 2019

Author(s): Guan Wu, Xingjiang Wu, Yijun Xu, Hengyang Cheng, Jinku Meng, Qiang Yu, Xinyiao Shi, Kai Zhang, Wei Chen, Su Chen

Abstract Bioinspired methods allowing artificial actuators to perform controllably are potentially important for various principles and may offer fundamental insight into chemistry and engineering. To date, the main challenges persist regarding the achievement of large deformation in fast response‐time and potential‐engineering applications in which electrode materials and structures limit ion diffusion and accumulation processes. Herein, a novel electrochemical actuator is developed that...
