W/O/W Multiple Emulsions as the Functional Component of Dairy Products

Published: 13 February 2019

Author(s): Iveta Klojdová, Jiří Štětina, Šárka Horáčková

Abstract Water‐in‐oil‐in‐water (w/o/w) multiple emulsions are considered that could be suitable components of functional dairy products. Such emulsions enable the preparation of low‐calorie products, encapsulation of bioactive components or microorganisms, and their protection during digestion. Because of the large phase interface, w/o/w emulsions are thermodynamically unstable. Therefore, their preparation and stabilization requires specific conditions. This review describes a potential...

Natural Products from Diaporthe arecae with Anti‐Angiogenic Activity

Published: 13 February 2019

Author(s): Fang‐Rong Chang, Shih‐Wei Wang, Chi‐Ying Li, Yen‐Yi Lu, Shang‐Yin Vanson Liu, Ching‐Yeu Chen, Yang‐Chang Wu, Yuan‐Bin Cheng

Abstract A new indoleglycerol, designated as arecine (1), and twenty‐three known diketopiperazines 2–24 were isolated from the endophytic fungus Diaporthe arecae associated with mangrove Kandelia obovate. Structures of all secondary metabolites 1–24 were identified on the basis of their spectrometric data, especially the nuclear magnetic resonance, optical rotation, and mass data. The absolute stereochemistry of compound 1 was determined by comparing its experimental electronic circular...

Evaluation of aerobic/anaerobic industrial wastewater treatment processes: The application of multi‐criteria decision analysis

Published: 13 February 2019

Author(s): Sahar Saghafi, Atieh Ebrahimi, Naser Mehrdadi, Gholamreza Nabi Bidhendy

Various technological methods are available for industrial wastewater treatment; from conventional to advanced treatment processes. Hence, it is a difficult task to select the most appropriate technology to treat industrial wastewater at a particular location. Many factors are involved in the decision‐making process, including capital, operation, and maintenance costs, as well as land requirement. The present work reports the results of the application of multiple‐attribute decision‐making...

Regioselective Synthesis of Symmetrical and Unsymmetrical Bis(heteroaryl)methane (BHM)‐Containing Amino Acids

Published: 13 February 2019

Author(s): Rafat Ali, Mohd. Zisan Ahamad, Shalini Singh, Wahajul Haq

The simple and straightforward method for the preparation of symmetrical bis(heteroaryl)methane (BHM)‐containing amino acids by the reaction of cyclic enecarbamate with heteroaromatics has been developed. The reaction goes in regioselective manner and we get only 3, 3′‐bis(heteroaryl)methane (BHM)‐containing amino acids. In addition to this synthesis, of unsymmetrical bisindolylmethane (BIM)‐containing amino acids is also reported. These symmetrical and unsymmetrical BIM‐containing amino acids...

New Insights into the Reaction Capabilities of Ionic Organic Bases in Cu‐Catalyzed Amination

Published: 13 February 2019

Author(s): Quintin A. Lo, David Sale, D. Christopher Braddock, Robert P. Davies

The application of ionic organic bases in the copper‐catalyzed amination reaction (Ullmann reaction) has been studied at room temperature, with sub‐mol‐% catalyst loadings, and with more challenging amines at elevated temperatures. The cation present in the base has been shown to have little effect on the reaction at standard catalyst and ancillary ligand loadings, whereas the choice of anion is crucial for good reactivity. A substrate scope carried out at room temperature with the best...

Pd‐Catalyzed Synthesis of γ‐Keto Esters as Key Intermediates for the Synthesis of γ‐Hydroxybutenolides

Published: 13 February 2019

Author(s): Mathias Schacht, Djawid Mohammadi, Nina Schützenmeister

We herein report a robust and safe palladium catalyzed domino‐carbonylation/Suzuki–Miyaura cross‐coupling reaction of vinyltosylates with arylboronic acids using Mo(CO)6 as CO‐source. The derived γ‐keto ester were subsequently cyclized under acidic conditions to obtain γ‐hydroxybutenolides, an important structural motif, which occurs in biologically active natural products.

Performance Degradation of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Caused by an Accelerated Stress Test

Published: 13 February 2019

Author(s): X. Zhang, Y. Yang, X. Zhang, L. Guo, H. Liu

Abstract Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) experiences inevitably performance decay due to various mechanisms. Among those, carbon corrosion is extremely detrimental. In this study, an accelerated stress test (AST) is conducted to a single cell to mimic the conditions when carbon corrosion occurs. The cell performance is characterized intermittently, and the experiment results show although electrochemical active area (ECA) decreases continuously from beginning‐of‐life (BOL) due to...

Rapid Transmembrane Transport of DNA Nanostructures by Chemically Anchoring Artificial Receptors on Cell Membranes

Published: 13 February 2019

Author(s): Min Li, Jiangbo Liu, Mengying Deng, Zhilei Ge, Noshin Afshan, Xiaolei Zuo, Qian Li

Abstract Highly efficient transmembrane transport of exogenous reagents into cells is of vital importance for developing drug‐delivery systems. Conventionally, transmembrane transport of exogenous reagents was accomplished with the assistance of transfection agents or other artificial means. However, the high toxicity and low transport efficiency of current delivery techniques still remain to be solved. In this work, by anchoring artificial receptors onto cell membranes with a mild chemical...

Surface shear stress relaxation of silica glass

Published: 13 February 2019

Author(s): Emily M. Aaldenberg, Jared S. Aaldenberg, Thierry A. Blanchet, Minoru Tomozawa

Abstract A constant angle of twist was applied to silica glass rods in order to produce a torsional shear strain and a reduction in torque representative of the stress state in the glass was measured as a function of time when rods were heat‐treated in air at temperatures, 550‐700°C, far below the glass transition temperature. The monotonic decrease of torque with time was explained by surface stress relaxation, which can be described by a relaxation of stress at the surface of glass which is...
