Optimisation of the microencapsulation conditions and physicochemical properties of enteric‐coated lactase microcapsules

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Sung‐Il Ahn, Augustine Yonghwi Kim, Hae‐Soo Kwak

Enteric double‐coated lactase microcapsules were developed, and the encapsulation conditions were optimised using response surface methodology. The optimum concentration of the enteric coating material was 4.85 g/100 mL, and the amount of core material was 1.85 mL. The particle size of the zein‐coated microcapsules was 2.868 μm, which was smaller than that of the other microcapsules. All microcapsules showed high...

Lithium versus Mono/Polyvalent Ion Intercalation: Hybrid Metal Ion Systems for Energy Storage

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Radostina Stoyanova, Violeta Koleva, Antonia Stoyanova

Abstract The energy storage by redox intercalation reactions is, nowadays, the most effective rechargeable ion battery. When lithium is used as intercalating agents, the high energy density is achieved at an expense of non‐sustainability. The replacement of Li+ with cheaper monovalent ions enables to make greener battery alternatives. The utilization of polyvalent ions instead of Li+ permits to multiplying the battery capacity....

Development of a standardized chart review method to identify drug‐related hospital admissions in older people

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Stefanie Thevelin, Anne Spinewine, Jean‐Baptiste Beuscart, Benoit Boland, Sophie Marien, Fanny Vaillant, Ingeborg Wilting, Ariel Vondeling, Carmen Floriani, Claudio Schneider, Jacques Donzé, Nicolas Rodondi, Shane Cullinan, Denis O'Mahony, Olivia Dalleur

Aims We aimed to develop a standardized chart review method to identify drug‐related hospital admissions (DRA) in older people caused by non‐preventable adverse drug reactions and preventable medication errors including overuse, underuse and misuse of medications: the DRA adjudication guide. Methods The DRA adjudication guide was developed based on design...

Enhancement of the Electrocatalytic Activity of Thienyl‐Substituted Iron Porphyrin Electropolymers by a Hangman Effect

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Bettina Neumann, Robert Götz, Pierre Wrzolek, Frieder W. Scheller, Inez M. Weidinger, Matthias Schwalbe, Ulla Wollenberger

Abstract The thiophene‐modified iron porphyrin FeT3ThP and the respective iron Hangman porphyrin FeH3ThP, incorporating a carboxylic acid hanging group in the second coordination sphere of the iron center, were electropolymerized on glassy carbon electrodes using 3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) as co‐monomer. Scanning electron microscopy images and Resonance Raman spectra demonstrated incorporation of the porphyrin monomers into a...

Structural studies reveal the molecular mechanism of PET ase

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Chun‐Chi Chen, Xu Han, Tzu‐Ping Ko, Weidong Liu, Rey‐Ting Guo

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is a class of plastic material widely used in modern society, but large amounts of PET waste cause severe environmental problems. Obtained from a PET‐consuming bacterium Ideonella sakaiensis, the enzyme PETase exhibits superb hydrolytic activity and substrate preference toward PET. Here, we summarize some recent advances in the crystallographic analysis of PETase. These reports uncover structural features of PETase...

Engineering Functional Metal Materials at the Atomic Level

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Qiaofeng Yao, Xun Yuan, Tiankai Chen, David Tai Leong, Jianping Xie

Abstract With continuous research efforts devoted into synthesis and characterization chemistry of functional nanomaterials in the past decades, the development of metal materials is stepping into a new era, where atom‐by‐atom customization of property‐dictating structural attributes is expected. Herein, the state‐of‐the‐art modulation of functional metal nanomaterials at the atomic level, by size‐ and structure‐controlled synthesis...

A Convenient Synthesis of 1,2‐Disubstituted‐ cis ‐3,4‐Dihydroxypyrrolidines via an Ugi‐Four‐Component‐Reaction/Cycloisomerization/Dihydroxylation Protocol

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Gemma Flores‐Constante, Anahí C. Sánchez‐Chávez, Luis A. Polindara‐García

Dihydroxypyrrolidines constitute an important group of biologically active molecules that are found in nature. In this paper, we report the development of a selective method for the synthesis of 1,2‐disubstituted‐cis‐3,4‐dihydroxypyrrolidines from Ugi four‐component‐reaction/propargylamine adducts through a 5‐endo‐dig cycloisomerization and subsequent cis‐dihydroxylation process.

Development of an efficient stabiliser mixture for physical stability of nonfat unfizzy doogh

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Elham Khanniri, Mojtaba Yousefi, Nasim Khorshidian, Sara Sohrabvandi, Amir M Mortazavian

The effects of locust bean, carboxymethyl cellulose, a mixture of locust bean and carboxymethyl cellulose and Persian gum on different properties of nonfat doogh were studied over a period of 28 days. The results showed that samples containing a mixture of locust bean and carboxymethyl cellulose had the highest stability. Furthermore, the rheological behaviour of the doogh changed from Newtonian to pseudoplastic. Better sensory...

The Rise of Hydrogen Peroxide as the Main Product by Metal‐Free Catalysis in Oxygen Reductions

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Michele Melchionna, Paolo Fornasiero, Maurizio Prato

Abstract One of the recent trends in electrocatalytic reactions involves the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), where a new paradigm has been shaped to exploit this reaction for the synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). H2O2 is a very versatile chemical of high commercial value, prepared currently through poorly sustainable processes. The emergence of metal‐free carbon catalysts for the selective synthesis of H2O2 is expected to revolutionize...
