Stability and Specificity of Counterfeit Protection System Code

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Jiang‐Chun Li, Fang Fang, Xing‐Zhou Han, Biao Li, Wei Han, Qian Zhou

Abstract In this study, the stability and specificity of a counterfeit protection system (CPS) code were determined. This research involved an analysis of a counterfeit protection system code unit over time using the pattern location measurement method. We collected 379 sample sheets from 196 printers or photocopiers, covering 14 original brands, including 129 models. There was an interval of at least two months between the collections of samples from each machine. Four types of...

Silicosis: Diagnosis and Medicolegal Implications

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Brandon Bukovitz, Jonathan Meiman, Henry Anderson, Erin G. Brooks

Abstract Despite well‐publicized sources of occupational hazard, silicosis continues to threaten industrial workers in the United States. We performed a retrospective search of the University of Wisconsin electronic pathology database to retrieve autopsy cases of silicosis and collaborated with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services to obtain statewide epidemiologic data regarding silicosis morbidity/mortality since 2003. Three silicosis autopsy cases were retrieved: all were men...

Identification of a Suspect in a Murder Case through Recovery of Fingermarks from a Fired Cartridge Case

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Carlos M. A. Girelli, Breno R. Segatto

Abstract During the period of one year, the Police of the State of Espírito Santo in Brazil analyzed 1,431 cartridge cases obtained from crime scenes and seizures. The cartridges were subjected to a development sequence (cyanoacrylate fuming + gun bluing + fluorescent dying), and panoramic images of the developed fingermarks were generated based on the photographs taken during the rotation of the cartridges. Ridge details were observed in 50 cartridges, but only in 5 cartridges, the marks were...

Tunable model promoters in DFT simulations of catalysts

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Andrew Mahler, Kassidy Panno, Benjamin G. Janesko, Salvador Moncho, Edward N. Brothers

Promoter atoms can tune a catalyst's activity and selectivity by transferring charge to and from the active site. Rational design of promoted catalysts, using density functional theory calculations, is today limited by the need to simulate many catalyst and promoter configurations. We present a simple approximation that rapidly captures some trends in promoter effects, at a cost of complexity comparable with simulating unpromoted catalysts. Negative (positive) noninteger point charges...

Semi‐refined carrageenan film incorporated with α‐tocopherol: Application in food model

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Khadijah Husna Abd Hamid, Wan Amnin Wan Yahaya, Nur ‘Alia Zaini Mohd Saupy, María Pilar Almajano, Nurul Aini Mohd Azman

Abstract Semi‐refined carrageenan (SRC) film plasticized with glycerol and incorporated with α‐tocopherol was prepared for food packaging application. Functional characterization, thermal stability, and microstructure of SRC‐based films were analyzed. The effects of antioxidant α‐tocopherol from SRC‐based film were studied based on thiobarbituric acid‐reactive substance assay, metmyoglobin assay, and pH value in food model (meat patties) for 12 days of storage. The development of lipid...

Utilization of different oils and fats in cocoa hazelnut cream production

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Oğuz Aydemir

Abstract In this study, textural, rheological, particle size distribution (PSD), and sensory analyzes were performed to determine the possibility of using different oils or fats in production of cocoa hazelnut cream. The cream sample containing the margarine did not show oil separation as in the control samples. The closest accelerated fat separation values to the control samples were observed in cream samples containing margarine (6.87%) and sunflower seed oil (9.87%). The numerical D[4,3]...

miR‐155‐5p and miR‐760 mediate radiation therapy suppressed malignancy of non‐small cell lung cancer cells

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Lin Zhu, Feng Xue, Ying Cui, Shanshan Liu, Gen Li, Jian Li, Bixi Guan, Hai Zeng, Weixin Bian, Chuan Yang, Chunbo Zhao

Abstract MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in tumorigenesis of various cancers. Recent study suggested that miRNAs are involved in the therapeutic functions of radiation during cancer treatment. We found that radiation can decrease the migration and invasion of non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. Mechanistically, radiation can significantly increase the expression of miR‐155‐5p and miR‐760 in NSCLC cells. Knockdown of miR‐155‐5p and miR‐760 can attenuate radiation suppressed...

Performance Evaluation of a Registered Ballistic Database Using the Evofinder® System

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Yuesong Li, Sheng Lin, Yaping Luo, Zhongliang Mi

Abstract Firearms for police in China are registered along with their fired bullets and cartridge cases. A Registered Ballistic Database (RBD) of 1000 Norinco QSZ‐92 pistols with registered ammunition was established and was evaluated through the Evofinder® system. In this research, 1000 bullets and 1000 cartridge cases were randomly selected and correlated against an RBD of 2996 bullets and 2999 cartridge cases. Examiners found that successful identifications all ranked 1st, supported with...

Biofiltration of high concentrations of methanol vapors: removal performance, carbon balance and microbial and fly populations

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Blanca Cruz‐García, Andrea Selene Geronimo‐Meza, Concepción Martínez‐Lievana, Sonia Arriaga, Yolanda Huante‐González, Aitor Aizpuru

Abstract BACKGROUND Methanol vapors, broadly emitted by industry, can be cost‐effectively treated by biofiltration. However, long‐term operation under high concentrations regularly encountered in the pulp and paper industry ( 5 g m−3) has been barely studied. RESULTS Methanol concentrations between 1.6 and 14 g m−3 were treated in a biofilter. Complete methanol removal was obtained for concentrations up to 3.5 g m−3, for an empty bed retention time (EBRT) of 60 s. A higher EBRT (160 s) was...

Induction and genetic identification of a callus‐like growth developed in the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Ahmed Zayed, Mariya Kovacheva, Kai Muffler, Hans‐Werner Breiner, Thorsten Stoeck, Roland Ulber

Abstract Induction of an axenic filamentous‐like callus growth from the brown algae Fucus vesiculosus is described. Different treatments were investigated in various combinations to develop axenic cultures based on identification of surface symbionts via 18S ribosomal RNA. Moreover, viability was confirmed after such processes by 2,3,5‐triphenyl tetrazolium chloride assay that demonstrated an average viability of 29%, relative to nonsterilized explants. After six weeks of a phototrophic...
