High‐Salt Diet‐Induced Gastritis in C57BL/6 Mice is Associated with Microbial Dysbiosis and Alleviated by a Buckwheat Diet

Published: 17 February 2020

Author(s): Ya Li, Wen Li, Xiao Wang, Chao Ding, Junze Liu, Yan Li, Wenjuan Li, Yundong Sun

Scope A high‐salt diet is a cause of gastritis, but the associated mechanism remains unclear. Recent studies have shown that gastric flora is associated with a variety of stomach diseases, but it is not known whether gastric flora is involved in gastritis induced by a high‐salt diet. Methods and results Gastritis is successfully induced in C57BL/6 mice fed a high‐salt diet (salt: 5% NaCl) for four weeks. Through 16S rRNA gene sequencing, the composition of the stomach microbiota of mice fed...

Growth‐Factor Free Multicomponent Nanocomposite Hydrogels That Stimulate Bone Formation

Published: 17 February 2020

Author(s): Babatunde O. Okesola, Shilei Ni, Burak Derkus, Carles C. Galeano, Abshar Hasan, Yuanhao Wu, Jopeth Ramis, Lee Buttery, Jonathan I. Dawson, Matteo D'Este, Richard O. C. Oreffo, David Eglin, Hongchen Sun, Alvaro Mata

Abstract Synthetic osteo‐promoting materials that are able to stimulate and accelerate bone formation without the addition of exogenous cells or growth factors represent a major opportunity for an aging world population. A co‐assembling system that integrates hyaluronic acid tyramine (HA‐Tyr), bioactive peptide amphiphiles (GHK‐Cu2+), and Laponite (Lap) to engineer hydrogels with physical, mechanical, and biomolecular signals that can be tuned to enhance bone regeneration is reported. The...

Recoverability of Listeria monocytogenes after coculture with Tetrahymena pyriformis

Published: 17 February 2020

Author(s): Richard J. Meinersmann, Mark E. Berrang, Luanne L. Rigsby

Abstract Bactivory by protozoa is a major factor that limits the number of bacteria in nature and may control the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. The effectiveness of Tetrahymena pyriformis destruction of L. monocytogenes was measured. Within 1 hr, 35–40 T. pyriformis cells ingested an average of 1,219 CFU of L. monocytogenes. Gentamicin was then added to kill un‐ingested Listeria. In 24 hr, the recoverable bacteria were reduced at an exponential rate to undetectable levels (

Progress on Light‐Emitting Electrochemical Cells toward Blue Emission, High Efficiency, and Long Lifetime

Published: 17 February 2020

Author(s): Chen Zhang, Ruihuan Liu, Dongdong Zhang, Lian Duan

Abstract Since their emergence in the 1990s, light‐emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) have attracted much attention due to their unique properties and potential for use as an alternative technology for illuminations and displays. After decades of development, however, the performance of LECs remains far from satisfactory for practical applications, in particular for those requiring blue light. Efforts have been made to develop of highly efficient blue‐emitting materials and more advanced...

pH Switchable Nanoplatform for In Vivo Persistent Luminescence Imaging and Precise Photothermal Therapy of Bacterial Infection

Published: 17 February 2020

Author(s): Li‐Xia Yan, Li‐Jian Chen, Xu Zhao, Xiu‐Ping Yan

Abstract Photothermal therapy (PTT) is one of the most promising approaches to combat multidrug‐resistant bacteria with less potential to induce resistance and systemic toxicity. However, uncontrollable distribution of photothermal agents leads to lethal temperatures for normal cells, and failure to offer timely and effective antibacterial stewardship. A pH switchable nanoplatform for persistent luminescence imaging‐guided precise PTT to selectively destroy only pathological cells while...

Thermally‐Induced Flexo‐Type Effects in Nanopatterned Multiferroic Layers

Published: 17 February 2020

Author(s): Ronggang Cai, Vlad‐Andrei Antohe, Bernard Nysten, Luc Piraux, Alain M. Jonas

Abstract The difficulty to generate and control large strain gradients in materials hinders the investigation and application of flexoelectricity and flexomagnetism. This work demonstrates that thermal expansion can be used to induce very large non‐uniform strains at the nanoscale, resulting in giant strain gradients at moderate temperatures. This is demonstrated in a nanopatterned multiferroic hybrid layer consisting of a regular array of ferromagnetic metallic nanocylinders embedded in a...

Real‐Time Imaging Tracking of Engineered Macrophages as Ultrasound‐Triggered Cell Bombs for Cancer Treatment

Published: 17 February 2020

Author(s): Zhili Xu, Hongmei Liu, Hao Tian, Fei Yan

Abstract Cell‐based drug delivery systems are a promising platform for tumor‐targeted therapy due to their high drug‐loading capacities and inherent tumor‐homing abilities. However, the real‐time tracking of these carrier cells and controlled release of the encapsulated drugs are still challenging. Here, ultrasound‐activatable cell bombs are developed by encapsulating doxorubicin (DOX) and phase transformable perfluoropentane (PFP) into hollow mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles (HMONs) to...

Preparation of Photo‐Crosslinking Starch Colloidal Particles

Published: 17 February 2020

Author(s): Rongli Zhang, Fangwen Chu, Yunqin Hu, Huiling Hu, Yulong Hu, Huan Liu, Chaofei Huo, Hao Wang

Abstract A photo‐crosslinking cinnamic acid‐modified starch (CA‐St) copolymer is synthesized through an esterification reaction using 4‐dimethylaminopyridine and 1‐(3‐dimethylaminopropyl)‐3‐ethylcarbodiimide as catalysts. The structure of the CA‐St is confirmed by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy. Using the nanoprecipitation method, the photo‐crosslinking CA‐St copolymer is aggregated into colloidal particles (CPs). The formation process and photo‐crosslinking of CA‐St...

The Challenge of Conformational Isomerism in Cyclic Peptoids

Published: 17 February 2020

Author(s): Francesco De Riccardis

Peptoids (N‐substituted glycine oligomers) are an increasingly important class of peptidomimetic foldamers with conspicuous bioactivities, high degree of resistance to enzymatic degradation, and ability to form stable secondary structures. The intrinsic rigidity of their oligoamide framework (due to n→π*, side chains NCα–H···O=C n→σ*, and backbone Cα–H···O=C interactions), can be magnified by cyclization to afford macrocyclic species with unexpected stereochemical, topological and biochemical...

Regulation of matrix metalloproteinases 2 and 9 in corneal neovascularization

Published: 17 February 2020

Author(s): Jiahao Zhang, Shurong Wang, Yuxi He, Boyuan Yao, Yan Zhang

Abstract Corneal neovascularization (CNV), a pathological process of angiogenesis, can lead to serious consequences in the cornea. CNV is generally proved to associate with inflammation in the cornea closely, which is mainly elicited by the disruption of equilibrium between angiogenic and antiangiogenic factors. Angiogenic factors including vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs), basic fibroblast growth factors (bFGFs), and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are vital factors in the...
