Organoboron‐Containing Polymer Electrolytes for High‐Performance Lithium Batteries

Published: 20 January 2021

Author(s): Kuan Dai, Yuan Zheng, Weifeng Wei

Abstract Polymer electrolytes (PEs) have been deemed as a sought‐after candidate for next‐generation lithium batteries. Substantial effort has been dedicated to exploiting PEs with improved comprehensive performance. Organoboron compounds have aroused great interest in PEs due to their distinct characteristics such as high design diversity, excellent thermal stability, promoting lithium‐ion transportation, and raising Li+ transference number. Organoboron compounds also have unique functions...

Gradient Quasi‐Liquid Surface Enabled Self‐Propulsion of Highly Wetting Liquids

Published: 20 January 2021

Author(s): Lei Zhang, Zongqi Guo, Jyotirmoy Sarma, Weiwei Zhao, Xianming Dai

Abstract Self‐propulsion of highly wetting liquids is important in heat exchanger, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. However, it is challenging to achieve such a spontaneous motion as these liquids tend to wet all the surfaces due to their ultralow surface tensions. Despite that extensive asymmetric surface structures and gradient chemical coatings are developed for directional droplet transport, they will be flooded and covered by these liquids. Here, this challenge is addressed by...

Assessment of Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein Binding to the Surface of Leukocytes with Dark‐Field Imaging and Computational Analysis

Published: 20 January 2021

Author(s): Fei Peng, Sinyoung Jeong, German Gonzalez, Haley Marks, Alexander Ho, Emmanuel Roussakis, Petra B. Krauledat, Peter Hansen, Conor L. Evans

Abstract The glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is widely established as a traumatic brain injury (TBI) biomarker and can be used in early diagnosis. As essential primary human immune cells, leukocytes are recruited to injured cerebral sites during TBI response, where they can interact with and potentially bind to TBI biomarkers. To date, no studies have demonstrated ultra‐low GFAP binding enumeration on leukocytes. Herein, a dark‐field imaging technique coupled with computational analysis...

In‐Plane Magnetic Field‐Driven Creation and Annihilation of Magnetic Skyrmion Strings in Nanostructures

Published: 20 January 2021

Author(s): Nitish Mathur, Fehmi S. Yasin, Matthew J. Stolt, Takuro Nagai, Koji Kimoto, Haifeng Du, Mingliang Tian, Yoshinori Tokura, Xiuzhen Yu, Song Jin

Abstract In bulk chiral crystals, 3D structures of magnetic skyrmions form topologically protected skyrmion strings (SkS) that have shown potential as magnonic nano‐waveguides for information transfer. Although SkS stability is expected to be enhanced in nanostructures of skyrmion‐hosting materials, experimental observation and detection of SkS in nanostructures under an applied in‐plane magnetic field is difficult. Here, temperature‐dependent magnetic field‐driven creation and annihilation of...

A Facile Magnetic Extrusion Method for Preparing Endosome‐Derived Vesicles for Cancer Drug Delivery

Published: 20 January 2021

Author(s): Peng Guo, Sara Busatto, Jing Huang, Golnaz Morad, Marsha A. Moses

Abstract To date, the scaled‐up manufacturing and efficient drug loading of exosomes are two existing challenges limiting the clinical translation of exosome‐based drug delivery. Herein, a facile magnetic extrusion method is developed for preparing endosome‐derived vesicles, also known as exosome mimetics (EMs), which share the same biological origin and similar morphology, composition, and biofunctions with native exosomes. The high yield and consistency of this magnetic extrusion method help...

Chemically Stabilized and Functionalized 2D‐MXene with Deep Eutectic Solvents as Versatile Dispersion Medium

Published: 20 January 2021

Author(s): Jeonghui Kim, Yeoheung Yoon, Seong K. Kim, Seungyoung Park, Wooseok Song, Sung Myung, Ha‐Kyun Jung, Sun Sook Lee, Dae Ho Yoon, Ki‐Seok An

Abstract 2D transition metal carbides and nitrides, namely MXenes, are normally synthesized in acidic solutions and are delaminated in basic solutions. This results in versatile materials with unique physical/chemical properties suitable for various practical applications. However, solution‐based chemical treatments can affect the chemical structures of MXenes, which accelerates the oxidation reactions and degrades their intrinsic properties. Here, long‐term stable Ti3C2Tx dispersion in deep...

The Effect of Alkyl Spacers on the Mixed Ionic‐Electronic Conduction Properties of N‐Type Polymers

Published: 20 January 2021

Author(s): Iuliana P. Maria, Bryan D. Paulsen, Achilleas Savva, David Ohayon, Ruiheng Wu, Rawad Hallani, Aniruddha Basu, Weiyuan Du, Thomas D. Anthopoulos, Sahika Inal, Jonathan Rivnay, Iain McCulloch, Alexander Giovannitti

Abstract Conjugated polymers with mixed ionic and electronic transport are essential for developing the complexity and function of electrochemical devices. Current n‐type materials have a narrow scope and low performance compared with their p‐type counterparts, requiring new molecular design strategies. This work presents two naphthalene diimide‐bithiophene (NDI‐T2) copolymers functionalized with hybrid alkyl‐glycol side chains, where the naphthalene diimide unit is segregated from the...

Large Damping Enhancement in Dirac‐Semimetal–Ferromagnetic‐Metal Layered Structures Caused by Topological Surface States

Published: 20 January 2021

Author(s): Jinjun Ding, Chuanpu Liu, Yuejie Zhang, Vijaysankar Kalappattil, Rui Yu, Uppalaiah Erugu, Jinke Tang, Haifeng Ding, Hua Chen, Mingzhong Wu

Abstract This article reports damping enhancement in a ferromagnetic NiFe thin film due to an adjacent α‐Sn thin film. Ferromagnetic resonance studies show that an α‐Sn film separated from a NiFe film by an ultrathin Ag spacer can cause an extra damping in the NiFe film that is three times bigger than the intrinsic damping of the NiFe film. Such an extra damping is absent in structures where the α‐Sn film interfaces directly with a NiFe film, or is replaced by a β‐Sn film. The data suggest...

High‐Density Frenkel Defects as Origin of N‐Type Thermoelectric Performance and Low Thermal Conductivity in Mg3Sb2‐Based Materials

Published: 20 January 2021

Author(s): Tsutomu Kanno, Hiromasa Tamaki, Masato Yoshiya, Hiroshi Uchiyama, Sachiko Maki, Masaki Takata, Yuzuru Miyazaki

Abstract Mg3Sb2‐based intermetallic compounds with exceptionally high thermoelectric performance exhibit unconventional n‐type dopability and anomalously low thermal conductivity, attracting much attention to the underlying mechanisms. To date, investigations have been limited to first‐principle calculations and thermodynamic analysis of defect formation, and detailed experimental analysis on crystal structure and phonon modes has not been achieved. Here, a synchrotron X‐ray diffraction study...
