Exosomes in Inflammation and Inflammatory Disease

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Brandon Dow Chan, Wing‐Yan Wong, Magnolia Muk‐Lan Lee, William Chi‐Shing Cho, Benjamin K. Yee, Yiu Wa Kwan, William Chi‐Shing Tai

Abstract Exosomes are a subset of extracellular vesicles released by all cell types and involved in local and systemic intercellular communication. In the past decade, research into exosomes has swelled as their important role in the mediation of health and disease has been increasingly established and acknowledged. Exosomes carry a diverse range of cargo including proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids derived from their parental cell that, when delivered to the recipient cell, can confer...

Modeling and Parameter Identification for a Biofilm in a Microbial Fuel Cell

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Fabian Kubannek, Ulrike Krewer

Abstract A dynamic physical model of a microbial fuel cell (MFC) anode is presented and parameterized. It describes the evolution of current density and biofilm mass over time as a function of substrate concentration. The model is particularly useful for process monitoring or control purposes because it reproduces the dynamics of the MFC anode and contains comparatively few parameters. Parameters are identified using data from the response of the MFC to a substrate concentration pulse....

Separations of antifungal compounds in capillary electrophoresis with two anionic cyclodextrins

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Anca‐Elena Dascalu, Alina Ghinet, Muriel Billamboz, Emmanuelle Lipka

Abstract CD‐CZE methods were developed for complete stereoisomeric separations of a series of six γ‐lactam analogues, of which some were neutral, or cationic depending on the background electrolyte nature. The tested cyclodextrin was the versatile sulfobutylether‐ β‐CD, used either in a phosphate buffer using capillaries dynamically coated with polyethylene oxide or in a borate buffer using uncoated capillaries. Long‐end and short‐end modes and concentration variations of chiral selectors...

Radiation synthesis of polysilane‐modified graphene oxide for improving thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of silicone rubber

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Pei Dai, Yang Jiao, Huiling Ma, Xinmiao Zeng, Yongjun Lu, Liancai Wang, Mao Bao, Maolin Zhai

ABSTRACT Functionalized graphene oxide (named GO‐Si) was synthesized with graphene oxide and triethoxyvinylsilane (TEVS) using tetrahydrofuran solution by γ‐ray irradiation. TEVS was successfully covered onto GO sheets, and the polysilane content on GO‐Si was increased upon increasing the absorbed dose. The structures of GO‐Si were verified by atomic force microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The resultant GO‐Si was dispersed into...

An integration of algal biofuel production planning, scheduling, and order‐based inventory distribution control systems

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Yohanes K. Nugroho, Liandong Zhu

Abstract This paper studies an integration model of production planning, scheduling, and order‐ based inventory distribution control systems. It models supply‐chain and production dynamics and employs process control to supply‐chain operations and the production process and scheduling. It embeds generalized disjunctive programming (GDP) and branch‐and‐reduce algorithms to obtain an optimal solution. Generalized disjunctive programming reformulates the original mixed integer nonlinear...

Novel polyhydrazides and polyoxadiazoles based on 1,3,4‐thiadiazole moiety in the main chain with high thermal stability, good solubility, and notable antimicrobial activity

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Kamal I. Aly, Osama Younis, Nayef S. Al‐Muaikel, Ahmed A. Atalla, Abu‐Bakr A. A. M. El‐Adasy, Ahmed R. Abdellah

ABSTRACT Polyoxadiazoles (PODs) and polyhydrazides (PHs) have wide potential applications; however, PODs are normally insoluble in organic solvents, do not melt, and do not express glass‐transition temperature (Tg), and also PHs do not have high‐temperature resistance. In this work, novel PHs based on 1,3,4‐thiadiazole in the polymer main chain were synthesized by low‐temperature polycondensation. New PODs were then obtained by cyclodehydration of the PHs. The thermal behavior, surface...

Threshold protective effect of deuterated polyunsaturated fatty acids on peroxidation of lipid bilayers

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Alexander M. Firsov, Maksim A. Fomich, Andrei V. Bekish, Olga L. Sharko, Elena A. Kotova, Harry J. Saal, Dragoslav Vidovic, Vadim V. Shmanai, Derek A. Pratt, Yuri N. Antonenko, Mikhail S. Shchepinov

Autoxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) damages lipid membranes and generates numerous toxic by‐products implicated in neurodegeneration, aging, and other pathologies. Abstraction of bis‐allylic hydrogen atoms is the rate‐limiting step of PUFA autoxidation, which is inhibited by replacing bis‐allylic hydrogens with deuterium atoms (D‐PUFAs). In cells, the presence of a relatively small fraction of D‐PUFAs among natural PUFAs is sufficient to effectively inhibit lipid peroxidation...

Light‐controlled carotenoid transfer between water‐soluble proteins related to cyanobacterial photoprotection

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Yury B. Slonimskiy, Fernando Muzzopappa, Eugene G. Maksimov, Adjélé Wilson, Thomas Friedrich, Diana Kirilovsky, Nikolai N. Sluchanko

Carotenoids are lipophilic pigments with multiple biological functions from coloration to vision and photoprotection. Still, the number of water‐soluble carotenoid‐binding proteins described to date is limited, and carotenoid transport and carotenoprotein maturation processes are largely underexplored. Recent studies revealed that CTDHs, which are natural homologs of the C‐terminal domain (CTD) of the orange carotenoid protein (OCP), a photoswitch involved in cyanobacterial photoprotection,...

A stable engineered human IgG3 antibody with decreased aggregation during antibody expression and low pH stress

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Seiji Saito, Hiroshi Namisaki, Keiko Hiraishi, Nobuaki Takahashi, Shigeru Iida

Abstract Human IgG comprises four subclasses with different biological functions. The IgG3 subclass has a unique character, exhibiting high effector function and Fab arm flexibility. However, it is not used as a therapeutic drug owing to an enhanced susceptibility to proteolysis. Antibody aggregation control is also important for therapeutic antibody development. To date, there have been few reports of IgG3 aggregation during protein expression and the low pH conditions needed for purification...

Production and recovery of poly‐3‐hydroxybutyrate [P(3HB)] of ultra‐high molecular weight using fed‐batch cultures of Azotobacter vinelandii OPNA strain

Published: 22 March 2019

Author(s): Andrés García, Diana Pérez, Manuel Castro, Viviana Urtuvia, Tania Castillo, Alvaro Díaz‐Barrera, Guadalupe Espín, Carlos Peña

Abstract BACKGROUND Poly‐3‐hydroxybutyrate P(3HB) is a bioplastic that is characterized for its biodegradability and biocompatibility and can be used in the biomedical field. The aim of this study was to evaluate the scaling‐up process at pilot level, for the production and recovery of P(3HB) synthesized by Azotobacter vinelandii OPNA strain, based on the use of fed‐batch fermentation coupled to a recovery method using nonhalogenated solvents (ethanol and acetone). RESULTS In fed‐batch...
