Selective Catalytic Hydration of Alkynes in the Presence of Au‐Cavitands: A Study in Structure–Activity Relationships

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Mami Inoue, Katto Ugawa, Tomoyuki Maruyama, Tetsuo Iwasawa

The effects of the catalytic cavities in gold‐functionalized cavitands in the hydration of internal alkynes have been studied. Variations on cavitand structures revealed the importance of two features that were studied: (1) flanking aromatic rings, and (2) an adjacent P=O moiety. The di‐quinoxaline‐spanned resorcin[4]arene system provides a well‐defined compartment, in which a cationic Au ion activates an internal alkyne for conversion...

Impact of material emissions and sorption of volatile organic compounds on indoor air quality in a low energy building: Field measurements and modeling

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Malak Rizk, Fangfang Guo, Marie Verriele, Michael Ward, Sebastien Dusanter, Nadège Blond, Nadine Locoge, Coralie Schoemaecker

Abstract The assessment of VOC emission rates and sorption coefficients was performed for ten surfaces present within a classroom, using field and laboratory emission cells (FLEC) coupled to online and off‐line VOC quantification techniques. A total of 21 identified VOCs were emitted by the different surfaces. VOC emission rates measured using PTR‐ToF‐MS were compared to gas chromatographic measurements. The results showed that the...

Understanding the structural origin of intermediate glasses

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Siva Priya Jaccani, Siddharth Sundararaman, Liping Huang

Abstract Intermediate glasses show nearly constant elastic moduli with temperature and/or pressure. These glasses would prove useful in designing a‐thermal optical fibers for enhanced telecommunication, fiber sensing applications, and in designing glass products for applications where a broad range of thermal and mechanical stimulation is expected. In this study, intermediate glasses belonging to the Na2O–SiO2, Na2O–Al2O3–SiO2, and...

Intramolecular Pd‐Catalyzed Formal anti ‐Carboalkoxylation of Alkynes: Access to Tetrasubstituted Enol Ethers

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Theresa Schitter, Peter G. Jones, Daniel B. Werz

Abstract An intramolecular Pd‐catalyzed formal anti‐carboalkoxylation reaction is presented that provides access to tetrasubstituted enol ethers. The key to success is a cascade consisting of a formal anti‐carbopalladation of a carbon–carbon triple bond followed by a nucleophilic attack of a hydroxy group at the emerging vinyl organopalladium species. The desired transformation proceeded smoothly with primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols,...

Emerging Methods and Design Principles for Cell‐Penetrant Peptides

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Leila Peraro, Joshua A. Kritzer

Abstract Biomolecules such as antibodies, proteins, and peptides are important tools for chemical biology and leads for drug development. They have been used to inhibit a variety of extracellular proteins, but accessing intracellular proteins has been much more challenging. In this review, we discuss diverse chemical approaches that have yielded cell‐penetrant peptides and identify three distinct strategies: masking backbone amides,...

Three‐Dimensional Heterocycles by Iron‐Catalyzed Ring‐Closing Sulfoxide Imidation

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Hao Yu, Zhen Li, Carsten Bolm

Abstract A general and atom‐economical method for the synthesis of cyclic sulfoximines by intramolecular imidations of azido‐containing sulfoxides using a commercially available FeII phthalocyanine (FeIIPc) as catalyst has been developed. The method conveys a broad functional group tolerance and the resulting three‐dimensional heterocycles can be modified by cross‐coupling reactions.

Chiral N,N Ligands Enabling Palladium‐Catalyzed Enantioselective Intramolecular Heck–Matsuda Carbonylation Reactions by Sequential Migratory and CO Insertions

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Rafaela C. Carmona, Otto D. Köster, Carlos Roque Duarte Correia

Abstract Unprecedented enantioselective intramolecular Heck carbonylation reactions of arenediazonium salts were enabled by a chiral N,N ligand. This reaction constitutes the first enantioselective Heck carbonylation that proceeds through migratory insertion followed by CO insertion. The enantioenriched functionalized dihydrobenzofurans were obtained in good to high yields and enantiomeric ratios of up to 98:2 under mild and...

A Practical and General Amidation Method from Isocyanates Enabled by Flow Technology

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Jason D. Williams, William J. Kerr, Stuart G. Leach, David M. Lindsay

Abstract The addition of carbon nucleophiles to isocyanates represents a conceptually flexible and efficient approach to the preparation of amides. This general synthetic strategy has, however, been relatively underutilized owing to narrow substrate tolerance and the requirement for less favourable reaction conditions. Herein, we disclose a high‐yielding, mass‐efficient, and scalable method with appreciable functional group...

Thieno[3,4‐ c ]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione Oligothiophenes Have Two Crossed Paths for Electron Delocalization

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Dafei Yuan, Samara Medina Rivero, Paula Mayorga Burrezo, Longbin Ren, María E. Sandoval‐Salinas, Sławomir J. Grabowski, David Casanova, Xiaozhang Zhu, Juan Casado

Abstract A new series of electron‐deficient oligothiophenes, thieno[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione oligothiophenes (OTPDn), from the monomer to hexamer, is reported. The optical and structural properties in the neutral states have been analyzed by absorption and emission spectroscopy together with vibrational Raman spectroscopy. In their reduced forms, these molecules could stabilize both anions and dianions in similar ways. For the dianions, two...
