PdII‐Catalyzed Enantioselective C(sp3)−H Activation/Cross‐Coupling Reactions of Free Carboxylic Acids

Published: 16 January 2019

Author(s): Liang Hu, Peng‐Xiang Shen, Qian Shao, Kai Hong, Jennifer X. Qiao, Jin‐Quan Yu

Abstract PdII‐catalyzed enantioselective C(sp3)−H cross‐coupling of free carboxylic acids with organoborons has been realized using either mono‐protected amino acid (MPAA) ligands or mono‐protected aminoethyl amine (MPAAM) ligands. A diverse range of aryl‐ and vinyl‐boron reagents can be used as coupling partners to provide chiral carboxylic acids. This reaction provides an alternative approach to the enantioselective synthesis of cyclopropanecarboxylic acids and cyclobutanecarboxylic acids...

Palladium/Norbornene‐Catalyzed Indenone Synthesis from Simple Aryl Iodides: Concise Syntheses of Pauciflorol F and Acredinone A

Published: 16 January 2019

Author(s): Feipeng Liu, Zhe Dong, Jianchun Wang, Guangbin Dong

Abstract To show the synthetic utility of palladium/norbornene (Pd/NBE) cooperative catalysis, here we report concise syntheses of indenone‐based natural products, pauciflorol F and acredinone A, which are enabled by direct annulation between aryl iodides and unsaturated carboxylic acid anhydrides. Compared to the previous indenone‐preparation approaches, this method allows simple aryl iodides to be used as substrates with complete control of the regioselectivity. The total synthesis of...

LIMD1 phosphorylation in mitosis is required for mitotic progression and its tumor‐suppressing activity

Published: 16 January 2019

Author(s): Jiuli Zhou, Lin Zhang, Wei Zhou, Yuanhong Chen, Yufeng Cheng, Jixin Dong

LIM domains containing 1 (LIMD1) is a member of the Zyxin family proteins and functions as a tumor suppressor in lung cancer. LIMD1 has been shown to regulate Hippo‐YAP signaling activity. Here, we report a novel regulatory mechanism for LIMD1. We found that cyclin‐dependent kinase 1 (CDK1) and c‐Jun NH2‐terminal kinases 1/2 (JNK1/2) phosphorylate LIMD1 in vitro and in cells during anti‐tubulin drug‐induced mitotic arrest. Phosphorylation also occurs during normal mitosis. S272, S277, S421,...

Precise In Vivo Inflammation Imaging Using In Situ Responsive Cross‐linking of Glutathione‐Modified Ultra‐Small NIR‐II Lanthanide Nanoparticles

Published: 16 January 2019

Author(s): Mengyao Zhao, Rui Wang, Benhao Li, Yong Fan, Yifan Wu, Xinyan Zhu, Fan Zhang

Abstract To improve the bioimaging signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR), long‐term imaging capability, and decrease the potential biotoxicity, an in vivo cross‐linking strategy was developed by using sub‐10 nm, glutathione‐modified, lanthanide nanoprobes. After administration, the nanoprobes cross‐link in response to reactive oxygen species (ROS) at the inflamed area and enable the quick imaging of ROS in the second near‐infrared (NIR‐II) window. These nanoprobes could be rapidly excreted due to their...

PdII‐Catalyzed Regio‐ and Enantioselective Oxidative C−H/C−H Cross‐Coupling Reaction between Ferrocenes and Azoles

Published: 16 January 2019

Author(s): Zhong‐Jian Cai, Chen‐Xu Liu, Qing Gu, Chao Zheng, Shu‐Li You

Abstract Asymmetric C−H bond functionalization reaction is one of the most efficient and straightforward methods for the synthesis of optically active molecules. Herein we disclose an asymmetric C−H/C−H cross‐coupling reaction of ferrocenes with azoles such as oxazoles and thiazoles. Palladium(II)/monoprotected amino acid (MPAA) catalytic system which exhibits excellent reactivity and regioselectivity for oxazoles and thiazoles. This method offers a powerful strategy for constructing planar...

Oxygen triggers signal transduction in the DevS (DosS) sensor of Mycobacterium tuberculosis by modulating the quaternary structure

Published: 16 January 2019

Author(s): Josiane Bezerra da Silva Lobão, Ana C. S. Gondim, Wellinson G. Guimarães, Marie‐Alda Gilles‐Gonzalez, Luiz Gonzaga de França Lopes, Eduardo H. S. Sousa

A major challenge to the control and eventual eradication of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection is this pathogen's prolonged dormancy. The heme‐based oxygen sensor protein DevS (DosS) plays a key role in this phenomenon, because it is a major activator of the transcription factor DevR. When DevS is active, its histidine protein kinase region is ON and it phosphorylates and activates DevR, which can induce the transcription of the dormancy regulon genes. Here, we have investigated the...

Activating Inert Metallic Compounds for High‐Rate Lithium–Sulfur Batteries Through In Situ Etching of Extrinsic Metal

Published: 16 January 2019

Author(s): Meng Zhao, Hong‐Jie Peng, Ze‐Wen Zhang, Bo‐Quan Li, Xiao Chen, Jin Xie, Xiang Chen, Jun‐Yu Wei, Qiang Zhang, Jia‐Qi Huang

Abstract Surface reactions constitute the foundation of various energy conversion/storage technologies, such as the lithium–sulfur (Li‐S) batteries. To expedite surface reactions for high‐rate battery applications demands in‐depth understanding of reaction kinetics and rational catalyst design. Now an in situ extrinsic‐metal etching strategy is used to activate an inert monometal nitride of hexagonal Ni3N through iron‐incorporated cubic Ni3FeN. In situ etched Ni3FeN regulates...

Carbon‐Based Metal‐Free Catalysts for Electrocatalytic Reduction of Nitrogen for Synthesis of Ammonia at Ambient Conditions

Published: 16 January 2019

Author(s): Shenlong Zhao, Xunyu Lu, Lianzhou Wang, Julian Gale, Rose Amal

Abstract The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is a promising catalytic system for N2 fixation in ambient conditions. Currently, metal‐based catalysts are the most widely studied catalysts for electrocatalytic NRR. Unfortunately, the low selectivity and poor resistance to acids and bases, and the low Faradaic efficiency, production rate, and stability of metal‐based catalysts for NRR make them uncompetitive for the synthesis of ammonia in comparison to the industrial...

Facile and Scalable Fabrication of Surface‐Modified Sponge for Efficient Solar Steam Generation

Published: 16 January 2019

Author(s): Zheng Zhang, Peng Mu, Jingxian He, Zhaoqi Zhu, Hanxue Sun, Huijuan Wei, Weidong Liang, An Li

Abstract Solar steam generation is a highly promising technology for harvesting solar energy and desalination. Here, a new solar steam generation system is introduced based on a surface‐modified polyurethane sponge with bilayered structures for efficient solar steam generation. The top layer, coated with polydimethylsiloxane‐modified graphite powder, serves as light‐to‐heat conversion layer with a broad optical absorption, whereas the lower part of the sponge acts as a thermal insulator with a...
