Viscoelastic behaviors and drying kinetics of different aqueous gelcasting systems for large Nd: YAG laser ceramics rods

Published: 17 February 2020

Author(s): Qing Yao, Le Zhang, Pan Gao, Bingheng Sun, Cen Shao, Yuelong Ma, Tianyuan Zhou, Ming Li, Hao Chen, Yun Wang

Abstract Large and nondeforming Nd: YAG ceramic prepared by wet forming is of great importance as gain medium to obtain high‐power solid‐state lasers. However, it is difficult to achieve high‐quality laser ceramics due to insufficiency of the in‐depth understanding of transformation mechanism of gels viscoelasticity and effective control means during drying process. In this work, the rheological behaviors, viscoelastic characteristics, and mechanical strengths in classical acrylamide (AM) and...

Carbon nanotube/ZnO nanowire/polyvinylidene fluoride hybrid nanocomposites for enhanced electromagnetic interference shielding

Published: 17 February 2020

Author(s): Ali Shayesteh Zeraati, Uttandaraman Sundararaj

Abstract Lightweight and flexible materials with high conductivity and low thickness are highly desirable for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding applications. Developing hybrid nanostructured materials, which combine the properties of their constituents, is an excellent strategy to create highly effective EMI shields. In this study, we report a hybrid polymer nanocomposite composed of carbon nanotube (CNT) and ZnO nanowire (ZnONW) for EMI shielding applications. We found that the...

Antibacterial activity of Osmunda japonica (Thunb) polysaccharides and its effect on tomato quality maintenance during storage

Published: 17 February 2020

Author(s): Xiaochen Liu, Xiuling Zhang, Xueting Zhang, Fengfeng Li, Yaqin Tian, Meiling Du, Hengtian Zhao, Lingling Shao

Abstract Tomatoes are rich in nutrients, yet they have a short shelf life and are prone to decay due to bacterial invasion. Polysaccharides extracted from Osmunda japonica (Thunb) were briefly characterised. The inhibitory effect of polysaccharides on nine kinds of common spoilage and pathogenic bacteria in tomatoes stored postharvest was studied, and the polysaccharides had broad‐spectrum antibacterial and antifungal activities against many tested strains. The minimum inhibitory...

Identification of the regime boundaries in bubble columns based on the degree of randomness in the signals†

Published: 17 February 2020

Author(s): Stoyan Nedeltchev, Yasin Top, Mark W. Hlawitschka, Markus Schubert, Hans‐Jörg Bart

Abstract A new parameter (degree of randomness (DR)) was defined for the identification of the main transition velocities, U trans. The new method reconstructs the time series into multiple state vectors, thus generating non‐overlapping vector pairs and then compares the distance between them with a pre‐selected cut‐off length. The DR values were extracted from gauge and differential pressure fluctuations as well as x‐ray tomographic scans. At every U trans value, the DR index exhibited a...

Interaction of triols with formaldehyde and acetone: Experimental and theoretical study

Published: 17 February 2020

Author(s): Rimma Sultanova, Sophia Borisevich, Gulnara Raskil'dina, Julianna Borisova, Irina Baykova, Leonid Spirikhin, Sergey Khursan, Simon Zlotsky

Abstract Experimental and theoretical aspects of the condensation of glycerol and its homologs (1,2,3‐ and 1,2,4‐butanetriols) with formaldehyde and acetone are studied under conditions of acid catalysis. Calculation of the thermodynamic parameters of the resulting products by the composite method CBS‐QB3 shows that the six‐membered heterocycles, the products of the interaction of triols with formaldehyde, are thermodynamically more stable than the five‐membered acetals, while the reaction of...

Effect of heat treatment and salt addition on the physicochemical properties and quality of fresh noodles

Published: 17 February 2020

Author(s): Yanyan Zhang, Chong Liu, Jing Hong, Limin Li, Xueling Zheng, Ke Bian, Erqi Guan

Summary Heat treatment and salt addition on the physicochemical properties and quality of fresh noodles were investigated. The water activity was decreased, while the bound water content was increased after heat treatment, and this effect was dependent on the treated intensity and salt concentration, which extended the shelf life of noodles. The content of SDS‐soluble protein was decreased after heat treatment, and this effect was dependent on the treated intensity. However, 3% salt...

Crystalline Mesoporous Complex Oxides: Porosity‐Controlled Electromagnetic Response

Published: 16 February 2020

Author(s): Lei Jin, Xingsong Su, Jianhang Shi, Kuo‐Chih Shih, Daniel Cintron, Tong Cai, Mu‐Ping Nieh, Ou Chen, Steven L. Suib, Menka Jain, Jie He

Abstract A colloidal‐amphiphile‐templated growth is developed to synthesize mesoporous complex oxides with highly crystalline frameworks. Organosilane‐containing colloidal templates can convert into thermally stable silica that prevents the overgrowth of crystalline grains and the collapse of the mesoporosity. Using ilmenite CoTiO3 as an example, the high crystallinity and the extraordinary thermal stability of its mesoporosity are demonstrated at 800 °C for 48 h under air. This synthetic...

Kirigami‐Inspired Self‐Assembly of 3D Structures

Published: 16 February 2020

Author(s): Arif M. Abdullah, Xiuling Li, Paul V. Braun, John A. Rogers, K. Jimmy Hsia

Abstract Self‐assembly of 3D structures presents an attractive and scalable route to realize reconfigurable and functionally capable mesoscale devices without human intervention. A common approach for achieving this is to utilize stimuli‐responsive folding of hinged structures, which requires the integration of different materials and/or geometric arrangements along the hinges. It is demonstrated that the inclusion of Kirigami cuts in planar, hingeless bilayer thin sheets can be used to...

Polyphenol‐Sensitized Atomic Layer Deposition for Membrane Interface Hydrophilization

Published: 16 February 2020

Author(s): Xiaobin Yang, Pan Sun, Huiru Zhang, Zijing Xia, Ruben Z. Waldman, Anil U. Mane, Jeffrey W. Elam, Lu Shao, Seth B. Darling

Abstract Improvements in energy–water systems will necessitate fabrication of high‐performance separation membranes. To this end, interface engineering is a powerful tool for tailoring properties, and atomic layer deposition (ALD) has recently emerged as a promising and versatile approach. However, most non‐polar polymeric membranes are not amenable to ALD processing due to the absence of nucleation sites. Here, a sensitization strategy for ALD‐coating is presented, illustrated by membrane...

Characterization of chemical components of Periplocae Cortex and their metabolites in rats using ultra‐performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry

Published: 15 February 2020

Author(s): Zi‐ting Li, Feng‐xiang Zhang, Wei‐wu Chen, Ming‐hao Chen, Xi‐yang Tang, Meng‐nan Ye, Zhi‐hong Yao, Xin‐sheng Yao, Yi Dai

Abstract Periplocae Cortex, named Xiang‐Jia‐Pi in China, has been widely used to treat autoimmune diseases, especially rheumatoid arthritis. However, the in vivo substances of Periplocae Cortex remain unknown yet. In this study, an ultra‐performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry was used for profiling the chemical components and related metabolites of Periplocae Cortex. A total of 98 constituents were identified or tentatively characterized in...
