Highly Efficient Encapsulation and Phase Separation of Apolar Molecules by Magnetic Shell‐by‐Shell‐Coated Nanocarriers in Water

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Tobias Luchs, Marco Sarcletti, Lukas Zeininger, Luis Portilla, Christian Fischer, Sjoerd Harder, Marcus Halik, Andreas Hirsch

Abstract We report on the development of a supramolecular nanocarrier concept that allows for the encapsulation and separation of small apolar molecules from water. The nanocarriers consist of shell‐by‐shell‐coated nanoparticles such as TiO2 and ferromagnetic Fe3O4. The first ligand shell is provided by covalently bound hexadecyl phosphonic acid (PAC16) and the second shell by noncovalently assembled amphiphiles rendering the hybrid architecture soluble in...

Capturing the Genesis of an Active Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis Catalyst with Operando X‐ray Nanospectroscopy

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Ilse K. van Ravenhorst, Charlotte Vogt, Heiko Oosterbeek, Koen W. Bossers, José G. Moya‐Cancino, Alexander P. van Bavel, Ad M. J. van der Eerden, David Vine, Frank M. F. de Groot, Florian Meirer, Bert M. Weckhuysen

Abstract A state‐of‐the‐art operando spectroscopic technique is applied to Co/TiO2 catalysts, which account for nearly half of the world's transportation fuels produced by Fischer–Tropsch catalysis. This allows determination of, at a spatial resolution of approximately 50 nm, the interdependence of formed hydrocarbon species in the inorganic catalyst. Observed trends show intra‐ and interparticular heterogeneities previously believed not to...

Liquorice ( Glycyrrhiza glabra ): A phytochemical and pharmacological review

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Giulia Pastorino, Laura Cornara, Sónia Soares, Francisca Rodrigues, M. Beatriz P.P. Oliveira

In the last years, consumers are paying much more attention to natural medicines and principles, mainly due to the general sense that natural compounds are safe. On the other hand, there is a growing demand by industry for plants used in traditional medicine that could be incorporated in foods, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, or even pharmaceuticals. Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn. belongs to the Fabaceae family and has been recognized since ancient times for...

Gadolinium deposition and the potential for toxicological sequelae – A literature review of issues surrounding gadolinium‐based contrast agents

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Kerry A. Layne, Paul I. Dargan, John R. H. Archer, David M. Wood

Every year, approximately 30 million magnetic resonance imaging scans are enhanced with gadolinium‐based contrast agents (GBCAs) worldwide. Although the development of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis in patients with renal impairment is well‐documented, over recent years it has become apparent that exposure to GBCAs can potentially result in gadolinium deposition within human bone and brain tissue even in the presence of normal renal...

Cleavage of C–C and C–O Bonds to Form C–C Bonds: Direct Cross‐Coupling between Acetylenic Alcohols and Benzylic Carbonates

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Zhiyuan Mi, Jiahao Tang, Zhipeng Guan, Wei Shi, Hao Chen

A palladium‐catalyzed cross‐coupling reaction between C(sp) and C(sp3) centers was achieved in excellent yields via C–C bond cleavage and C–O bond cleavage. This procedure uses relatively stable acetylenic alcohols as reactants instead of unstable/volatile terminal alkynes. The use of benzylic carbonates also avoids the involvement of benzyl halides, making this method more practical in synthesis. Ligands play an important role in the procedure ...

Regio‐ and Stereoselective Synthesis of Bicyclic Limonene‐Based Chiral Aminodiols and Spirooxazolidines

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Tam Minh Le, Antal Csámpai, Ferenc Fülöp, Zsolt Szakonyi

Abstract A library of monoterpene‐based aminodiols was synthesized and applied as chiral catalysts in the addition of diethylzinc to benzaldehyde. The reduction of a bicyclic α‐methylene ketone, derived from natural (−)‐limonene followed by epoxidation, gave the key epoxy alcohol intermediate. Ring opening of the oxirane ring with primary amines induced by lithium perchlorate afforded the required aminodiols. Substituent‐dependent...

Aminodecalone Scaffolds – Enantioselective Synthesis, Indole and Quinoline Annulation

Published: 17 August 2018

Author(s): Benjamin Schäfer, Marc Schmidtmann, Jens Christoffers

Optically active benzo[b]carbazole and benzo[b]acridine derivatives were prepared by Fischer indole or Friedländer quinoline annulation from 2‐oxodecalone‐4a‐carboxylates with a quaternary stereocenter. As an additional point for diversification, the target compounds carry a nitro function, which was transformed to an amide or lactam after reduction. The scaffold itself was accessed by asymmetric, copper catalyzed Michael reaction of a...
