Mechanistic Insights into the Rh(I)/Rh2(II)‐Catalyzed Divergent Ring‐Opening of Cyclopropenes: A Computational Study

Published: 18 September 2020

Author(s): Luyao Kou, Ping Dai, Xiaoguang Bao

Abstract The mechanisms of transition‐metal‐catalyzed cyclopropenes involved reactions are complicated since diversified active intermediates could be potentially formed. Herein, computational studies were performed to gain mechanistic insights into the Rh(I)‐ and Rh2(II)‐catalyzed regioselective ring‐opening of allylic cyclopropenecarboxylate (1) and further rearrangement to form Δβ,γ butenolides. For the Rh(I)‐catalyzed ring‐opening of cyclopropene moiety of 1, an unusual oxidative addition...

Multifunctional WO3/NiCo2O4 heterojunction with extensively exposed bimetallic Ni/Co redox reaction sites for efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting

Published: 18 September 2020

Author(s): Zhichao Hao, Zhengang Guo, Mengnan Ruan, Jing Ya, Yong Yang, Xiangfeng Wu, Zhifeng Liu

Abstract The enhanced separation and injection efficiencies of photogenerated carriers is essential to improve the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of WO3 photoanode. In this work, we firstly synthesized WO3/NiCo2O4 heterojunction through simple hydrothermal‐annealing method as well as investigate the effect and mechanism of NiCo2O4 on WO3 for PEC performances. The measurements demonstrate that the nano‐needle NiCo2O4 grown on the surface of WO3 induces the bimetallic Ni/Co redox...

Dual Improvement of β‐MnO2 Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysts via Combined Substrate Control and Surface Engineering

Published: 18 September 2020

Author(s): Lorenzo Bigiani, Alberto Gasparotto, Chiara Maccato, Cinzia Sada, Johan Verbeeck, Teresa Andreu, Juan Ramón Morante, Davide Barreca

Abstract The development of catalysts with high intrinsic activity towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a critical role in sustainable energy conversion and storage. Herein, we report on the development of efficient (photo)electrocatalysts based on functionalized MnO2 systems. Specifically, β‐MnO2 nanostructures grown by plasma enhanced‐chemical vapor deposition on fluorine‐doped tin oxide (FTO) or Ni foams were decorated with Co3O4 or Fe2O3 nanoparticles by radio frequency...

Meticulous Doxorubicin Release from pH‐Responsive Nanoparticles Entrapped within an Injectable Thermoresponsive Depot

Published: 18 September 2020

Author(s): Huayang Yu, Nicola Ingram, Jason V. Rowley, David C. Green, Paul D. Thornton

Abstract The dual stimuli‐controlled release of doxorubicin from gel‐embedded nanoparticles is reported. Non‐cytotoxic polymer nanoparticles are formed from poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(benzyl glutamate) that, uniquely, contain a central ester link. This connection renders the nanoparticles pH‐responsive, enabling extensive doxorubicin release in acidic solutions (pH 6.5), but not in solutions of physiological pH (pH 7.4). Doxorubicin‐loaded nanoparticles were found to be stable for at least...

Light Runs Across Iron Catalysts in Organic Transformations

Published: 18 September 2020

Author(s): Wen‐Jun Zhou, Xu‐Dong Wu, Meng Miao, Zhe‐Hao Wang, Liang Chen, Si‐Yi Shan, Guang‐Mei Cao, Da‐Gang Yu

Abstract Over the past decades, organometallic complexes with precious elements, such as ruthenium and iridium, are widely used as visible‐light photoredox catalysts. Recently, more and more complexes based on earth‐abundant and inexpensive elements have been used as sensitizers in photochemistry. Although the photoexcited state lifetimes of iron complexes are typically shorter than those of traditional photosensitizers, the utilization of iron catalysts in photochemistry has sprung up owing...

Incorporation of Boron into Uranium Metallacycles: Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity of Boron‐Containing Uranacycles Derived from Bis(alkynyl)boranes

Published: 18 September 2020

Author(s): Wangyang Ma, Iskander Douair, Laurent Maron, Qing Ye

Abstract The reaction of uranacyclopropene complex (C5Me5)2U[η2‐1,2‐C2(SiMe3)2] with B‐aryl bis(alkynyl)borane PhB(C≡CPh)2 led to the first six‐membered uranium metallaboracycle, while the reaction with B‐amino bis(alkynyl)borane (Me3Si)2NB(C≡CPh)2 afforded an unexpected uranaborabicyclo[2.2.0] complex via [2+2] cycloaddition. The reaction with CuCl revealed the non‐innocent property of the rearranged bis(alkynyl)boron species towards oxidant. The reactions with isocyanide DippNC:...

Evaluation of Pd→B Interactions in Diphosphinoborane Complexes and Impact on Inner‐Sphere Reductive Elimination

Published: 18 September 2020

Author(s): Florian Ritter, Lukas John, Tobias Schindler, Julian P. Schroers, Simon Teeuwen, Michael E. Tauchert

Abstract The dative Pd→B interaction in a series of RDPBR’ Pd0 and PdII complexes (RDPBR’=(o‐PR2C6H4)2BR’, diphosphinoborane) was analyzed using XRD, 11B NMR spectroscopy and NBO/NLMO calculations. The borane acceptor discriminates between the oxidation state PdII and Pd0, stabilizing the latter. Reaction of lithium amides with [(RDPBR’)PdII(4‐NO2C6H4)I] chemoselectively yields the C−N coupling product. DFT modelling indicates no significant impact of PdII→B coordination on the inner‐sphere...

Zinc Interactions with a Soluble Mutated Rat Amylin to Mimic Whole Human Amylin: An Experimental and Simulation Approach to Understand Stoichiometry, Speciation and Coordination of the Metal Complexes

Published: 18 September 2020

Author(s): Antonio Magrì, Giovanni Tabbì, Giuseppe Di Natale, Diego La Mendola, Adriana Pietropaolo, Maria Antonietta Zoroddu, Massimiliano Peana, Enrico Rizzarelli

Abstract Islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) is a hormone co‐secreted with insulin and zinc from pancreatic β‐cells. To overcome the low solubility of human IAPP, we characterized zinc complexes species formed with 1) a mutated form of rat‐IAPP(1–37; R18 H) able to mimic the human IAPP, 2) the r‐IAPP(1–37) and the IAPP(1–8) fragment. Stoichiometry, speciation and coordination features of zinc(II) complexes were unveiled by ESI‐MS, potentiometry and NMR measurements combined with DFT and...
