Anion‐Responsive π‐Electronic Systems Exhibiting Diverse Conformations and Stoichiometries in Anion Binding

Published: 25 May 2020

Author(s): Yohei Haketa, Atsushi Naganawa, Shinya Sugiura, Nobuhiro Yasuda, Hiromitsu Maeda

Dimers of pyrrole‐based anion‐responsive π‐electronic molecules that are linked by appropriate π‐conjugated spacers were synthesized through metal‐catalyzed coupling reactions. The dimers showed [2+1]‐, [1+1]‐, and [1+2]‐type anion binding in solution, whereas [2+2]‐ and [1+2]‐type complexes were formed in the solid state, depending on the length and electronic properties of the spacer units. The dimer with an electron‐deficient spacer unit formed a [2+1]‐type double helical structure with...

Heavy Metals Make a Chain: A Catenated Bismuth Compound

Published: 25 May 2020

Author(s): Robert D. Riley, Diane A. Dickie, Michael A. Land, Richard A. Kemp, Charles L. B. Macdonald, Ulrike Werner‐Zwanziger, Katherine N. Robertson, Jason A. C. Clyburne

Abstract Catenation is common for the light main‐group elements whereas it is rare for the heavy elements. Herein, we report the first example of a neutral molecule containing a Bi4 chain. It is prepared in a one‐step reaction between bismuth trichloride and bis(diisopropylphosphino)amine in methanol suspension. The same reaction carried out in dichloromethane gives quite different products. All products have been characterized spectroscopically and using single‐crystal X‐ray analysis.

Gas‐Phase Synthesis of 3‐Vinylcyclopropene via the Crossed Beam Reaction of the Methylidyne Radical (CH; X2Π) with 1,3‐Butadiene (CH2CHCHCH2; X1Ag)

Published: 25 May 2020

Author(s): Chao He, Long Zhao, Srinivas Doddipatla, Aaron M. Thomas, Anatoliy A. Nikolayev, Galiya R. Galimova, Valeriy N. Azyazov, Alexander M. Mebel, Ralf I. Kaiser

Abstract The crossed molecular beam reactions of the methylidyne radical (CH; X2Π) with 1,3‐butadiene (CH2CHCHCH2; X1Ag) along with their (partially) deuterated counterparts were performed at collision energies of 20.8 kJ mol−1 under single collision conditions. Combining our laboratory data with ab initio calculations, we reveal that the methylidyne radical may add barrierlessly to the terminal carbon atom and/or carbon−carbon double bond of 1,3‐butadiene, leading to doublet C5H7...

Theoretical and Experimental Studies on the Near‐Infrared Photoreaction Mechanism of a Silicon Phthalocyanine Photoimmunotherapy Dye: Photoinduced Hydrolysis by Radical Anion Generation

Published: 25 May 2020

Author(s): Masato Kobayashi, Mei Harada, Hideo Takakura, Kanta Ando, Yuto Goto, Takao Tsuneda, Mikako Ogawa, Tetsuya Taketsugu

Abstract Ligand release from IR700, a silicon phthalocyanine dye used in near‐infrared (NIR) photoimmunotherapy, initiates cancer cell death after NIR absorption, although its photochemical mechanism has remained unclear. This theoretical study reveals that the direct Si‐ligand dissociation by NIR light is difficult to activate because of the high dissociation energy even in excited states, i. e., 1.30 eV. Instead, irradiation generates the IR700 radical anion, leading to acid‐base reactions...

Alkyne‐Monofunctionalized Gold Nanoparticles as Massive Molecular Building Blocks

Published: 20 May 2020

Author(s): Erich Henrik Peters, Marcel Mayor

Using a tripodal, thioether‐based ligand comprising a remote protected acetylene, we efficiently stabilize small gold nanoparticles (Ø ≈ 1.2 nm) which are isolated and purified by chromatography. The 1:1 ligand‐to‐particle ratio is obtained by comparing the particles' dimensions measured by transmission electron microscopy with the weight fraction of the coating ligand determined by thermogravimetric analysis. The single ligand coating of the gold particle guarantees the presence of a single...

Hexacyanoferrate‐Intercalated Layered Double Hydroxides as Nanoadditives for the Detection of Early‐Stage Corrosion of Steel: The Revival of Prussian blue

Published: 20 May 2020

Author(s): Manon Wilhelm, Marcela C. Quevedo, Alesia Sushkova, Tiago L. P. Galvão, Alexandre Bastos, Mário Ferreira, João Tedim

This work describes the synthesis and characterization of Zn‐Al and Mg‐Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalated with hexacyanoferrate. X‐ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy indicated a successful intercalation of hexacyanoferrate in the sub‐micrometer sized platelet‐like particles. Release studies of hexacyanoferrate from LDHs found that the anion is released depending on the concentration of NaCl and under alkaline conditions. When placed in contact...

Influence of Functional Groups towards the β‐Selective Glycosylation of 2‐Azido‐2‐deoxy Glycosyl Thioglycosides

Published: 20 May 2020

Author(s): Arin Gucchait, Monalisa Kundu, Tapasi Manna, Pradip Shit, Anup Kumar Misra

The influence of the functional groups present in the glycosyl donor on the stereoselective glycosylation of 2‐azido‐2‐deoxy sugar thioglycosides under the N‐iodosuccinimide (NIS) and triflic acid (TfOH) mediated glycosylation conditions has been studied in detail. It was observed that beta glycosides of 2‐azido‐2‐deoxy sugar are formed mainly via a stable alpha‐glycosyl triflate intermediate followed by SN2 substitution of the triflate group by the acceptor. The presence of an electron...

Versatile Binding Modes of Chiral Macrocyclic Amine towards Rare Earth Ions

Published: 20 May 2020

Author(s): Karol Wydra, Michał J. Kobyłka, Tadeusz Lis, Katarzyna Ślepokura, Jerzy Lisowski

Depending on the reaction conditions, the enantiopure macrocycle H3L containing three phenolic units is able to form mono‐ and trinuclear coordination compounds with rare earth metal ions. In these complexes this macrocycle can act as protonated H4L+, neutral H3L, monodeprotonated H2L–, bis‐deprotonated HL2– or tris‐deprotonated L3– ligand. X‐ray crystal structure of the Y(III) derivative of the protonated macrocycle shows highly folded conformation of the ligand with N2O3 set of donor atoms,...

Selective PdII‐Catalyzed Acylation of Pyrrole with Aldehydes. Application to the Synthesis of Celastramycin Analogues and Tolmetin

Published: 20 May 2020

Author(s): Carlos Santiago, Ibon Rubio, Nuria Sotomayor, Esther Lete

The PdII‐catalyzed C‐2 acylation of pyrrole with aldehydes in the presence of TBHP as oxidant has been studied for the synthesis of di(hetero)aryl ketones. The use of 2‐pyrimidine as directing group leads to 2‐acylpyrroles in moderate to good yields, although 2,5‐diacylpyrroles are obtained as by products. This side‐reaction could be avoided using 3‐methy‐2‐pyridine as directing group, obtaining selectively 2‐acylpyrroles. The reaction has been extended to a series of aromatic and...
