Engineered Sorghum Bagasse Enables a Sustainable Biorefinery with p‐Hydroxybenzoic Acid‐Based Deep Eutectic Solvent

Published: 18 October 2021

Author(s): Yunxuan Wang, Xianzhi Meng, Yang Tian, Kwang Ho Kim, Linjing Jia, Yunqiao Pu, Gyu Leem, Deepak Kumar, Aymerick Eudes, Arthur J. Ragauskas, Chang Geun Yoo

Abstract Integrating multidisciplinary research in plant genetic engineering and renewable deep eutectic solvents (DESs) can facilitate a sustainable and economic biorefinery. Herein, we leveraged a plant genetic engineering approach to specifically incorporate C6C1 monomers into the lignin structure. By expressing the bacterial ubiC gene in sorghum, p‐hydroxybenzoic acid (PB)‐rich lignin was incorporated into the plant cell wall while this monomer was completely absent in the lignin of the...

Metal‐Free Triazine‐Based 2D Covalent Organic Framework for Efficient H2 Evolution by Electrochemical Water Splitting

Published: 18 October 2021

Author(s): Santu Ruidas, Bishnupad Mohanty, Piyali Bhanja, E. S. Erakulan, Ranjit Thapa, Prasenjit Das, Avik Chowdhury, Sanjay K. Mandal, Bikash Kumar Jena, Asim Bhaumik

Abstract Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by electrochemical water splitting is one of the most active areas of energy research, yet the benchmark electrocatalysts used for this reaction are based on expensive noble metals. This is a major bottleneck for their large‐scale operation. Thus, development of efficient metal‐free electrocatalysts is of paramount importance for sustainable and economical production of the renewable fuel hydrogen by water splitting. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs)...

4‐Sulfamoylphenylalkylamides as Inhibitors of Carbonic Anhydrases Expressed in Vibrio cholerae

Published: 18 October 2021

Author(s): Francesca Mancuso, Laura De Luca, Federica Bucolo, Milan Vrabel, Andrea Angeli, Clemente Capasso, Claudiu T. Supuran, Rosaria Gitto

Abstract A current issue of antimicrobial therapy is the resistance to treatment with worldwide consequences. Thus, the identification of innovative targets is an intriguing challenge in the drug and development process aimed at newer antimicrobial agents. The state‐of‐art of anticholera therapy might comprise the reduction of the expression of cholera toxin, which could be reached through the inhibition of carbonic anhydrases expressed in Vibrio cholerae (VchCAα, VchCAβ, and VchCAγ)....

Application of Deep Neural Network Models in Drug Discovery Programs

Published: 18 October 2021

Author(s): Christoph Grebner, Hans Matter, Daniel Kofink, Jan Wenzel, Friedemann Schmidt, Gerhard Hessler

Abstract In silico driven optimization of compound properties related to pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and safety is a key requirement in modern drug discovery. Nowadays, large and harmonized datasets allow to implement deep neural networks (DNNs) as a framework for leveraging predictive models. Nevertheless, various available model architectures differ in their global applicability and performance in lead optimization projects, such as stability over time and interpretability of the...

Alkali Metal Alkoxides in Noyori‐Type Hydrogenations

Published: 18 October 2021

Author(s): Pavel A. Dub

Abstract This minireview discusses the accelerative role of alkali metal alkoxides in two important catalytic processes: hydrogenation of ketones and esters with Noyori‐type molecular catalysts. Here I offer my perspective on the unique mechanistic aspects of these reactions – a subject that remains controversial and often misunderstood.

Magnesium(I) Reduction of CO and N2 Complexes of Cummins’ Molybdenum(III) Tris(anilide), [Mo(L){N(Ar’)But}3] (L=CO or N2; Ar’=3,5‐dimethylphenyl)

Published: 18 October 2021

Author(s): K. Yuvaraj, Albert Paparo, Aidan J. R. Matthews, Cameron Jones

Abstract Reductions of the in situ generated CO and N2 complexes of Cummins’ molybdenum(III) tris(anilide) complex, viz. [Mo(L){N(Ar’)But}3] (L=CO or N2, Ar’=3,5‐dimethylphenyl), using a dimagnesium(I) compound, [{(MesNacnac)Mg}2] (MesNacnac=[HC(MeCNMes)2]−, Mes=mesityl), are reported. Reduction of [Mo(CO){N(Ar’)But}3] afforded a mixture of products, three of which were isolated in low yield and crystallographically characterized. These were a molybdenum(II) tris(carbamoyl) complex,...

An Efficient Approach for the Synthesis of Pd Nanoparticles via Modifying Al2O3 with Cellulose and Its Application for CO Oxidation

Published: 18 October 2021

Author(s): Bing Li, Qiaoying Wang, Jiaming Zhu, Gang Yang, Hualiang Liu, Qing Zhang, Weizheng Weng, Huilin Wan

Abstract Pd nanoparticles were generated over Al2O3 modified by cellulose allowing a facile crystallization and used for CO oxidation. Smaller particles were prone to be formed over the support with the assistance of cellulose. The enhanced catalytic activity could be ascribed to the positive interaction between Pd particles and the modulated support.

Coupling Interrupted Fischer and Multicomponent Joullié‐Ugi to Chase Chemical Diversity: from Batch to Sustainable Flow Synthesis of Peptidomimetics

Published: 18 October 2021

Author(s): Antonella Ilenia Alfano, Elisabetta Buommino, Maria Grazia Ferraro, Carlo Irace, Angela Zampella, Heiko Lange, Margherita Brindisi

Abstract The generation of peptidomimetic substructures for medicinal chemistry purposes requires effective and divergent synthetic methods. We present in this work an efficient flow process that allows quick modulation of reagents for Joullié‐Ugi multicomponent reaction, using spiroindolenines as core motifs. This sterically hindered imine equivalent could successfully be diversified using various isocyanides and amino acids in generally good space‐time yields. A telescoped flow process...

Microwave Spectrum of Two‐Top Molecule: 2‐Acetyl‐3‐Methylthiophene

Published: 15 October 2021

Author(s): Christina Dindić, Ha Vinh Lam Nguyen

Abstract The microwave spectrum of 2‐acetyl‐3‐methylthiophene (2A3MT) was recorded in the frequency range from 2 to 26.5 GHz using a molecular jet Fourier transform microwave spectrometer and could be fully assigned to the anti‐conformer of the molecule, while the syn‐conformer was not observable. Torsional splittings of all rotational transitions in quintets due to internal rotations of the acetyl methyl and the ring methyl groups were resolved and analyzed, yielding barriers to internal...
