New Derivatives from Microbial Transformation of ent‐Kaur‐16‐en‐19‐oic Acid by Cunninghamella echinulata

Published: 26 May 2020

Author(s): Chenggang Song, Juan Liu, Haoyu Wang, Xiang Li, Bing Liu, Mingzhe Zhang, Xiaohui Shan, He Li, Jinming Gao, Jianchun Qin

Abstract Biotransformation of ent‐kaur‐16‐en‐19‐oic acid using fungus Cunninghamella echinulata resulted in two novel hydroxylated metabolites together with five known compounds. Their structures were elucidated by means of extensive NMR and HR‐ESI‐MS data analysis. The eight compounds were measured for their cytotoxicity against the human breast carcinoma (MCF‐7) and human hepatoblastoma (HepG‐2) cell lines. Seven compounds showed no cytotoxicity to the two cell lines. One compound displayed...

2‐Carboxyethylgermanium Sesquioxide as A Promising Anode Material for Li‐Ion Batteries

Published: 26 May 2020

Author(s): Evgeniya A. Saverina, Roman R. Kapaev, Pavel V. Stishenko, Alexey S. Galushko, Victoriya A. Balycheva, Valentine P. Ananikov, Mikhail P. Egorov, Viatcheslav V. Jouikov, Pavel A. Troshin, Mikhail A. Syroeshkin

Abstract Various forms of germanium and germanium‐containing compounds and materials are actively investigated as energy‐intensive alternatives to graphite as the anode of lithium‐ion batteries. The most accessible form—germanium dioxide—has the structure of a 3D polymer, which accounts for its rapid destruction during cycling, and requires the development of further approaches to the production of nanomaterials and various composites based on it. For the first time, we propose here the...

Cobalt‐Catalyzed Oxidative C−H Activation: Strategies and Concepts

Published: 26 May 2020

Author(s): Ruhuai Mei, Uttam Dhawa, Ramesh C. Samanta, Wenbo Ma, Joanna Wencel‐Delord, Lutz Ackermann

Abstract Inexpensive cobalt‐catalyzed oxidative C−H functionalization has emerged as a powerful tool for the construction of C−C and C−Het bonds, which offers unique potential for transformative applications to modern organic synthesis. In the early stage, these transformations typically required stoichiometric and toxic transition metals as sacrificial oxidants; thus, the formation of metal‐containing waste was inevitable. In contrast, naturally abundant molecular O2 has more recently been...

Total reflection X‐ray fluorescence analysis of elemental composition of herbal infusions and teas

Published: 26 May 2020

Author(s): Aleksandra Winkler, Mirjam Rauwolf, Johannes H Sterba, Peter Wobrauschek, Christina Streli, Anna Turyanskaya

Abstract BACKGROUND The elemental composition of herbal infusions and teas has not been sufficiently investigated. It could potentially be used for defining fingerprints for individual herbal / tea infusions, differentiation of botanical families, detecting the influence of packaging, and other purposes. The objective of this study was to determine the elemental composition, including the trace element content, of various herbal infusions and teas by means of total reflection X‐ray...

Ultrafast Carrier Transport through an Advanced Thick Electrode with a High Areal Capacity for Aqueous Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Published: 26 May 2020

Author(s): Ying‐Chu Chen, Yu‐Kuei Hsu

Abstract Thick electrode design holds great promise to render the aqueous lithium ion battery more cost effective by boosting the packing density of the electroactive materials to enhance the energy delivery at the device level. However, a thick electrode faces the concomitant challenge of the sluggish transport of electrons and, importantly, the Li ions. To address this issue, numerous 3 D shortcuts that include a conductive percolation network and well‐interconnected mesoporous channels were...

Single‐Atomic Catalysts Embedded on Nanocarbon Supports for High Energy Density Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Published: 26 May 2020

Author(s): Jian Wang, Lujie Jia, Hongzhen Lin, Yuegang Zhang

Abstract Lithium–sulfur batteries are among the most promising candidates for next‐generation energy‐storage systems due to its high theoretical energy density. However, the shuttle effect of polysulfides and sluggish reaction kinetics severely hinder the development of practical Li–S batteries. Merely depending on an adsorption strategy to resist the shuttle effect is insufficient to boost the overall electrochemical conversion reaction. Recently, single atom catalysts (SACs) have been used...

Photocatalytic Conversion of Lignin into Chemicals and Fuels

Published: 26 May 2020

Author(s): Zhiyu Xiang, Wanying Han, Jin Deng, Wanbin Zhu, Ying Zhang, Hongliang Wang

Abstract Lignin, an underutilized component of lignocellulosic biomass, is regarded as a rich reservoir for the production of aromatic chemicals and fuels. Despite extensive research in recent years, lignin's potential is far from being fully unlocked. Photocatalysis that uses sustainable solar energy to drive lignin conversion under mild conditions has been identified as a promising strategy and received growing research interest. This review aims to present a critical introduction to the...

The Synthesis of Primary Amines through Reductive Amination Employing an Iron Catalyst

Published: 26 May 2020

Author(s): Christoph Bäumler, Christof Bauer, Rhett Kempe

Abstract The reductive amination of ketones and aldehydes by ammonia is a highly attractive method for the synthesis of primary amines. The use of catalysts, especially reusable catalysts, based on earth‐abundant metals is similarly appealing. Here, the iron‐catalyzed synthesis of primary amines through reductive amination was realized. A broad scope and a very good tolerance of functional groups were observed. Ketones, including purely aliphatic ones, aryl–alkyl, dialkyl, and heterocyclic, as...
