Thymol ameliorates 5‐fluorouracil‐induced intestinal mucositis: Evidence of down‐regulatory effect on TGF‐β/MAPK pathways through NF‐κB

Published: 19 October 2021

Author(s): Layla A. Al‐Khrashi, Amira M. Badr, Maha A. AL‐Amin, Yasmen F. Mahran

Abstract 5‐Fluorouracil (5‐FU) is a front‐line cytotoxic therapy. However, intestinal mucositis is a well‐known adverse event of 5‐FU, which limits its therapeutic use. Indeed, thymol, which is a monoterpene component of the essential oil derived from thymus, has a potential anti‐inflammatory and immunomodulatory activity. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the potential chemoprotective effect of thymol against 5‐FU‐induced intestinal mucositis. Rats were either exposed to two doses of...

Trimetazedine with hyperinsulinimea–euoglycemia, N‐acetyl cysteine, and vitamin C: A new approach concept for management of aluminum phosphide poisoning

Published: 19 October 2021

Author(s): Doaa M. El Shehaby, Sally A. Sayed, Doaa M. Abd El‐Kareem, Raghda Elsherif, Doaa Almaz

Abstract Aluminum phosphide (AlP) is commonly used as a powerful suicidal tool. The exact mechanism of acute toxicity has not been well defined despite high mortality rates as well as its supportive treatment including rapid decontamination and institution of resuscitative measures. The current study aimed to investigate a new combination therapy using trimetazidine, N‐acetyl cysteine, vitamin C, and hyperinsulinemia–euglycemia to manage acute AlP poisoning. Acute AlP‐induced cardiotoxicity,...

Metal–Organic Frameworks‐Derived Self‐Supported Carbon‐Based Composites for Electrocatalytic Water Splitting

Published: 19 October 2021

Author(s): Yikang Cong, Shengsheng Huang, Yan Mei, Ting‐Ting Li

Abstract Electrocatalytic water splitting has been considered as a promising strategy for the sustainable evolution of hydrogen energy and storage of intermittent electric energy. Efficient catalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting are urgently demanded to decrease the overpotentials and promote the sluggish reaction kinetics. Carbon‐based composites, including heteroatom‐doped carbon materials, metals/[email protected] composites, metal [email protected] composites, and atomically dispersed...

The Effect of Cobalt Incorporation into Nickel–Iron Oxide/(oxy)hydroxide Catalyst on Electrocatalytic Performance Toward Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Published: 19 October 2021

Author(s): Karolina Cysewska, Marcin Zając, Marcin Łapiński, Jakub Karczewski, Maria K. Rybarczyk, Bartosz Kamecki, Piotr Jasiński, Sebastian Molin

This work presents a study on the influence of the addition of cobalt into state‐of‐the‐art nickel–iron (NiFe) mixed oxides/hydroxides/(oxy)hydroxides on their structural and morphological properties, and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity. A one‐step electrodeposition process is performed without any additives to fabricate NiFe and x cobalt‐doped nickel/iron (xCoNiFe) layer‐double‐hydroxide catalysts directly on nickel foam. The addition of cobalt nitrate in the synthesis...

Bipyridine‐Modified DNA Three‐Way Junctions with Amide linkers: Metal‐Dependent Structure Induction and Self‐Sorting

Published: 19 October 2021

Author(s): Yusuke Takezawa, Shiori Sakakibara, Mitsuhiko Shionoya

Abstract DNA three‐way junction (3WJ) structures are essential building blocks for the construction of DNA nanoarchitectures. We have synthesized a bipyridine (bpy)‐modified DNA 3WJ by using a newly designed bpy‐modified nucleoside, Ubpy‐3, in which a bpy ligand is tethered via a stable amide linker. The thermal stability of the bpy‐modified 3WJ was greatly enhanced by the formation of an interstrand NiII(bpy)3 complex at the junction core (ΔTm=+17.7 °C). Although the stereochemistry of the...

Ruthenium‐ and Copper‐Catalyzed Propargylic Substitution Reactions of Propargylic Alcohol Derivatives with Hydrazones

Published: 19 October 2021

Author(s): Shiyao Liu, Yoshiaki Tanabe, Shogo Kuriyama, Ken Sakata, Yoshiaki Nishibayashi

Abstract Ruthenium‐ and copper‐catalyzed propargylic substitution reactions of propargylic alcohol derivatives with N‐monosubstituted hydrazones as ambident nucleophiles are achieved in which N‐monosubstituted hydrazones exhibit impressive different reactivities depending on different catalytic systems, behaving as carbon‐centered nucleophiles to give the corresponding propargylic alkylated products in ruthenium catalysis, or as nitrogen‐centered nucleophiles to afford the corresponding...

From the {FeIII2Ln2} Butterfly's Perspective: the Magnetic Benefits and Challenges of Cooperativity within 3 d–4 f Based Coordination Clusters

Published: 19 October 2021

Author(s): Yan Peng, Hagen Kaemmerer, Annie K. Powell

Abstract In this Review we discuss the tuning handles which can be used to steer the magnetic properties of FeIII‐4 f “butterfly” compounds. The majority of presented compounds were produced in the context of project A3 “Di‐ to tetranuclear compounds incorporating highly anisotropic paramagnetic metal ions” within the SFB/TRR88 “3MET”. These contain {FeIII2Ln2} cores encapsulated in ligand shells which are easy to tune in a “test‐bed” system. We identify the following advantages and variables...

The Anionic Pathway in the Nickel‐Catalysed Cross‐Coupling of Aryl Ethers

Published: 19 October 2021

Author(s): Andryj M. Borys, Eva Hevia

Abstract The Ni‐catalysed cross‐coupling of aryl ethers is a powerful method to forge new C−C and C−heteroatom bonds. However, the inert C(sp2)−O bond means that a canonical mechanism that relies on the oxidative addition of the aryl ether to a Ni0 centre is thermodynamically and kinetically unfavourable, which suggests that alternative mechanisms may be involved. Here, we provide spectroscopic and structural insights into the anionic pathway, which relies on the formation of electron‐rich...

gem‐Heteroatom‐Substituted Fluoroalkenes as Mimics of Amide Derivatives or Phosphates: A Comprehensive Review

Published: 19 October 2021

Author(s): Solène Morand, Philippe Jubault, Jean‐Philippe Bouillon, Samuel Couve‐Bonnaire

Abstract gem‐Heteroatom‐substituted fluoroalkenes have received little attention despite their great potential in medicinal chemistry or in fine chemistry. Indeed, due to the electronic and steric similarity between the fluoroalkene moiety and the amide bond as well as the high strength of the carbon‐fluorine bond, these gem‐heteroatom‐substituted fluoroalkenes could be envisioned as stable mimics of various important organic functions, such as phosphates, carbamates, S‐thiocarbamates and...
