The Chemical Bond: When Atom Size Instead of Electronegativity Difference Determines Trend in Bond Strength

Published: 19 October 2021

Author(s): Eva Blokker, Xiaobo Sun, Jordi Poater, J. Martijn Schuur, Trevor A. Hamlin, F. Matthias Bickelhaupt

Abstract We have quantum chemically analyzed element−element bonds of archetypal HnX−YHn molecules (X, Y=C, N, O, F, Si, P, S, Cl, Br, I), using density functional theory. One purpose is to obtain a set of consistent homolytic bond dissociation energies (BDE) for establishing accurate trends across the periodic table. The main objective is to elucidate the underlying physical factors behind these chemical bonding trends. On one hand, we confirm that, along a period (e. g., from C−C to C−F),...

Light‐Modulated Cationic and Anionic Transport across Protein Biopolymers**

Published: 19 October 2021

Author(s): Alex Burnstine‐Townley, Somen Mondal, Yuval Agam, Ramesh Nandi, Nadav Amdursky

Abstract Light is a convenient source of energy and the heart of light‐harvesting natural systems and devices. Here, we show light‐modulation of both the chemical nature and ionic charge carrier concentration within a protein‐based biopolymer that was covalently functionalized with photoacids or photobases. We explore the capability of the biopolymer‐tethered photoacids and photobases to undergo excited‐state proton transfer and capture, respectively. Electrical measurements show that both the...

Improvement and validation of a computational model of flow in the swirling well cell culture model

Published: 19 October 2021

Author(s): Mehwish Arshad, Ethan M. Rowland, Kai Riemer, Spencer J. Sherwin, Peter D. Weinberg

Abstract Effects of fluid dynamics on cells are often studied by growing the cells on the base of cylindrical wells or dishes that are swirled on the horizontal platform of an orbital shaker. The swirling culture medium applies a shear stress to the cells that varies in magnitude and directionality from the center to the edge of the vessel. Computational fluid dynamics methods are used to simulate the flow and hence calculate shear stresses at the base of the well. The shear characteristics at...

Activity Test and Mechanism Study of 3DOM Ce0.8M0.1Zr0.1O2 (M=Cr, Sn, Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Cu) Catalyst in the Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO by CO**

Published: 19 October 2021

Author(s): Xia Liu, Hao Liu, Danyang Li, Gangjie Ning, Xinxin Li, Lihui Dong, Bin Li

Abstract A series of three‐dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) Ce0.8M0.1Zr0.1O2(M=Cr, Sn, Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Cu) catalysts are synthesized and used in CO selective catalytic reduction of NOx. The results show that the NO conversion rate of 3DOM Ce0.8Cu0.1Zr0.1O2 catalyst at a lower temperature (150 °C) is close to 60 %. Besides, 3DOM Ce0.8Cu0.1Zr0.1O2 kept a stable NO removal efficiency within a wide range of gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) and long reaction time and exhibited remarkable...

Indandione‐Terminated Quinoidal Compounds for Low‐Bandgap Small Molecules with Strong Near‐Infrared Absorption: Effect of Conjugation Length on the Properties

Published: 19 October 2021

Author(s): Lei Sun, Tian Du, Cheng Wang, Dongling Geng, Lin Li, Yang Han, Yunfeng Deng

Abstract Low‐bandgap organic semiconductors have attracted much attention for their multiple applications in optoelectronics. However, the realization of narrow bandgap is challenging particularly for small molecules. Herein, we have synthesized four quinoidal compounds, i. e., QSN3, QSN4, QSN5 and QSN6, with electron rich S,N‐heteroacene as the quinoidal core and indandione as the end‐groups. The optical bandgap of the quinoidal compounds is systematically decreased with the extension of...

Tunable Synchronicity of Molecular Valence Tautomerism with Macroscopic Solid‐Liquid Transition by Molecular Lattice Engineering

Published: 19 October 2021

Author(s): Mayumi Chida, Satoru Takahashi, Ryunosuke Konishi, Takeshi Matsumoto, Akinobu Nakada, Masanori Wakizaka, Wataru Kosaka, Hitoshi Miyasaka, Ho‐Chol Chang

Abstract The combination of a cobalt‐dioxolene core that exhibits valence tautomerism (VT) with pyridine‐3,5‐dicarboxylic acid functionalized with chains bearing two, four, or six oxyethylene units led to new complexes ConEGEspy (n = 2, 4, and 6). These complexes commonly form violet crystals of the low‐spin (ls)‐[CoIII(nEGEspy)2(3,6‐DTBSQ)(3,6‐DTBCat)] (ls‐[CoIII], 3,6‐DTBSQ = 3,6‐di‐tert‐butyl semiquinonato, 3,6‐DTBCat = 3,6‐di‐tert‐butyl catecholato). Interestingly, violet crystals of...

Palladium‐Catalyzed Hydroformylation of Alkenes and Alkynes

Published: 19 October 2021

Author(s): Yang Zhang, Michel Sigrist, Paweł Dydio

Abstract Hydroformylation of alkenes and alkynes with syngas represents a method of choice to furnish valuable aldehydes with the 100 % atom‐economy from readily available building blocks. The field is dominated by Rh‐ and Co‐catalysis; however, complexes of many other metals were also shown to be catalytically competent. Here we review the studies of hydroformylation under Pd‐catalysis, starting from the seminal reports up to the most recent examples. Special emphasis is paid to the unique...

Rational Selection of Cyanines to Generate Conjugate Acid and Free Radicals for Photopolymerization upon Exposure at 860 nm

Published: 19 October 2021

Author(s): Qunying Wang, Sergey Popov, Alfred Feilen, Veronika Strehmel, Bernd Strehmel

Abstract Different cyanines absorbing in the NIR between 750 and 930 nm were applied to study the efficiency of both radical and cationic polymerization in combination with diaryliodonium salt. Variation of the connecting methine chain and structure of the terminal indolium moiety provided a deeper insight in the structure of the cyanine NIR‐sensitizer and the efficiency to generate initiating radicals and conjugate acid. Photophysical studies were pursued by fluorescence spectroscopy...

Enantioselective Synthesis of Isoflavanones and Pterocarpans through a RuII‐Catalyzed ATH‐DKR of Isoflavones

Published: 19 October 2021

Author(s): Francisco V. Gaspar, Guilherme S. Caleffi, Paulo C. T. Costa‐Júnior, Paulo R. R. Costa

Abstract Noyori‐Ikariya RuII complexes promoted the one‐pot C=C/C=O bonds reduction of isoflavones using sodium formate as the hydrogen source through Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation‐Dynamic Kinetic Resolution (ATH‐DKR). Due to the neutral conditions employed, isoflavones with different substituents at the 2’‐position of B‐ring (H, OH, OMe and Br) were successfully reduced. Ten cis‐3‐phenylchroman‐4‐ols were selectively obtained ( 20 : 1 dr) in good yields (up to 86 %) and excellent...
