Raman Optical Activity of Glucose and Sorbose in Extended Wavenumber Range

Published: 25 May 2020

Author(s): Vladimír Palivec, Pavel Michal, Josef Kapitán, Hector Martinez‐Seara, Petr Bouř

Abstract Raman optical activity (ROA) is pursued as a promising method for structural analyses of sugars in aqueous solutions. In the present study, experimental Raman and ROA spectra of glucose and sorbose obtained in an extended range (50–4000 cm−1) are interpreted using molecular dynamics and density functional theory, with the emphasis on CH stretching modes. A reasonable theoretical basis for spectral interpretation was obtained already at the harmonic level. Anharmonic corrections led to...

Arylboronic Acids and their Myriad of Applications Beyond Organic Synthesis

Published: 25 May 2020

Author(s): Noemi de Jesus Hiller, Nayane Abreu do Amaral e Silva, Thais Apolinário Tavares, Robson Xavier Faria, Marcos Nogueira Eberlin, Daniela de Luna Martins

Boron organometallic compounds are mainly known for their great value in organic synthesis to construct biaryls in Suzuki couplings, for arylations of olefins, for C–S, C–O, and C–N couplings or as organometallic catalysts. Herein, using arylboronic acids (Ar‐B(OH)2) as a illustrative case, we review the applications of these highly versatile molecules which expands much beyond their commonly perceived uses. Seeing primarily as “mere” intermediates in organic synthesis and organometallic...

Biomolecular Simulation: a Perspective from High Performance Computing

Published: 25 May 2020

Author(s): Viacheslav Bolnykh, Ursula Rothlisberger, Paolo Carloni

Abstract High‐Performance Computing is impacting on all biomedical sciences, including molecular biophysics. Here, we describe general parallel computing strategies (multi‐threading and distributed computing) used in all the natural sciences, including molecular biophysics. Next, we describe how these strategies are applied in molecular dynamics simulations and enhanced sampling methods, either based on force fields, on density functional theory or on QM/MM potentials. As test cases, we focus...

A different chemical route to prepare hafnium diboride‐based nanofibers: Effect of chemical composition

Published: 25 May 2020

Author(s): Raziyeh Ghelich, Hossein Abdizadeh, Mohammad Reza Jahannama, Fatemeh Sadat Torknik, Mohammad Reza Vaezi

Abstract This study reports on the synthesis of hafnium diboride (HfB2)‐based nanofibers via electrospinning of polyhafnoxanesal (PHO)‐based solution followed by pyrolyzing hafnium‐boron containing polyvinylpyrrolidone precursor fibers by a moderate heat treatment at 1500°C under argon atmosphere. The influence of the molar ratios of C/Hf and B/Hf in preceramic polymer method is investigated on the final phase of HfB2‐based nanofibers. Structural, thermal, microstructural, and physical...

First‐principles Studies of Band Gap Engineering in Ferroelectric Oxides

Published: 25 May 2020

Author(s): Ilya Grinberg

Abstract In the last decade there has been a resurgence of activity in the field of photoferroelectrics with a focus on the studies of oxides. Ferroelectric (FE) materials have a spontaneous switchable polarization that can lead to interesting light‐matter interactions such as the bulk photovoltaic effect. While a wide range of compositions has been explored for ferroelectrics, until recently, FE oxides were considered to be capable of absorbing UV light only. Playing a key role in the advance...

Stereo‐ and Regioselective Cu‐Catalyzed Hydroboration of Alkynyl Chalcogenoethers

Published: 25 May 2020

Author(s): Isadora M. Oliveira, Henrique A. Esteves, Mariana P. Darbem, Arthur Sartorelli, Thiago C. Correra, André F. Rodrigues‐Oliveira, Daniel C. Pimenta, Julio Zukerman‐Schpector, Flávia Manarin, Hélio A. Stefani

Abstract A mild stereo‐ and regioselective Cu‐catalyzed hydroboration method for the synthesis of (Z)‐seleno‐alkenyl boronates and (Z)‐thio‐alkenylboronates from internal alkynes in the presence of commercially available B2pin2 is presented. This highly selective transformation relies on the use of N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complex IPrCuCl as the active catalytic species. We also explore the functionalization of the alkenylboronates obtained via oxidation to give α‐chalcogeno ketones,...

Preparation of Long‐Lived States in a Multi‐Spin System by Using an Optimal Control Method

Published: 25 May 2020

Author(s): Daxiu Wei, Jiaxiang Xin, Kairui Hu, Yefeng Yao

Abstract The lifetime Ts of a long‐lived nuclear spin state (LLS) could be much longer than the longitudinal order T1. Many spin systems were used to produce long‐lived states, including two or more homonuclear spins that couple to each other. For multiple homonuclear spins with rather small chemical shift difference, normally it is difficult to selectively control the spins and then to prepare a LLS. Herein, we present a scheme that prepares different spin orders in a multi‐spin system by...

Titania Morphology‐Dependent Catalysis of CuOx/TiO2 Catalysts in CO Oxidation and Water Gas Shift Reactions

Published: 25 May 2020

Author(s): Zongyou Yu, Zhenhua Zhang, Yunshang Zhang, Weixin Huang

Abstract CuOx/TiO2 nanocatalysts (x=0 or 1) with ∼11 % wt. Cu loading employing TiO2 nanocrystals with various morphologies predominantly exposing {001}, {100}, and {101} facets as supports have been synthesized as catalysts for CO oxidation with excess of O2 (oxidative atmosphere) and water gas shift (WGS) reaction (reductive atmosphere). Strong TiO2 morphology effects were observed. The strongest Cu2O−TiO2 interaction was observed in CuO−TiO2{001} nanocatalyst, while the strongest Cu‐TiO2...

Treated Oil Shale Ashes as a Substitute for Natural Aggregates, Sand, and Cement in Concrete

Published: 25 May 2020

Author(s): Sarit Nov, Haim Cohen, Yaniv Knop

Abstract Oil shales are rocks that contain organic matter and are used as a low‐grade fuel for energy production. The oil shale combustion process produces large quantities of ash as combustion wastes. These residues contain a high concentration of calcium anhydrite (CaSO4) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3), which can be utilized to neutralize acidic wastes (e. g., wastes from the phosphate industry) .Using untreated oil shale bottom ash as partial substitutes for aggregates, natural sand, and...
