Reducing the glycemic impact of carbohydrates on foods and meals: Strategies for the food industry and consumers with special focus on Asia

Published: 20 January 2020

Author(s): May S. M. Wee, Christiani Jeyakumar Henry

Abstract Type 2 diabetes is increasingly prevalent in Asia, which can be attributed to a carbohydrate‐rich diet, consisting of foods in the form of grains, for example, rice, or a food product made from flours or isolated starch, for example, noodles. Carbohydrates become a health issue when they are digested and absorbed rapidly (high glycemic index), and more so when they are consumed in large quantities (high glycemic load). The principal strategies of glycemic control should thus aim to...

Understanding spoilage microbial community and spoilage mechanisms in foods of animal origin

Published: 20 January 2020

Author(s): Olumide Adedokun Odeyemi, Oluwadara Oluwaseun Alegbeleye, Mariyana Strateva, Deyan Stratev

Abstract The increasing global population has resulted in increased demand for food. Goods quality and safe food is required for healthy living. However, food spoilage has resulted in food insecurity in different regions of the world. Spoilage of food occurs when the quality of food deteriorates from its original organoleptic properties observed at the time of processing. Food spoilage results in huge economic losses to both producers (farmers) and consumers. Factors such as storage...

Roadmap of cocoa quality and authenticity control in the industry: A review of conventional and alternative methods

Published: 20 January 2020

Author(s): Maribel Alexandra Quelal‐Vásconez, María Jesús Lerma‐García, Édgar Pérez‐Esteve, Pau Talens, José Manuel Barat

Abstract Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) and its derivatives are appreciated for their aroma, color, and healthy properties, and are commodities of high economic value worldwide. Wide ranges of conventional methods have been used for years to guarantee cocoa quality. Recently, however, demand for global cocoa and the requirements of sensory, functional, and safety cocoa attributes have changed. On the one hand, society and health authorities are increasingly demanding new more accurate quality...

Reduced‐sodium cheeses: Implications of reducing sodium chloride on cheese quality and safety

Published: 20 January 2020

Author(s): Venus Bansal, Santosh Kumar Mishra

Abstract Sodium chloride (NaCl) universally well‐known as table salt is an ancient food additive, which is broadly used to increase the storage stability and the palatability of foods. Though, in recent decades, use of table salt in foods is a major concern among the health agencies of the world owing to ill effects of sodium (Na) that are mostly linked to hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. As a result, food scientists are working to decrease the sodium content in food either by...

Laboratory selection, resistance risk assessment, multi‐resistance, and management of Tetranychus urticae Koch to bifenthrin, bifenazate and cyflumetofen on cowpea

Published: 20 January 2020

Author(s): Jiguang Huang, Xiaoyang Bi, Yaqian Liu, Qiang Yao, Lijuan Zhou, Zhenxiu Liu

Abstract BACKGROUND Tetranychus urticae (T. urticae) Koch is an important pest of vegetable crops worldwide. In this study, bioassays were carried out to analyze the resistance risk, multi‐resistance and management of T. urticae Koch to bifenthrin, bifenazate and cyflumetofen on cowpea. RESULTS The resistance ratios of the adult T. urticae population to bifenthrin (G16), bifenazate (G12) and cyflumetofen (G12) were 31.29, 9.38 and 5.81, respectively. Realized heritability (h 2) analysis showed...

Weed seed bank dynamics responses to long‐term chemical control in a rice–wheat cropping system

Published: 20 January 2020

Author(s): Sheng Qiang, Xiaoling Song, Ruhai Li, Ranling Zuo, Jiguang Wei, Shouhui Wei, Yuxiang Mao, Junming Shen, Zheng Zhang, Pinglei Gao

Abstract BACKGROUND It remains an open question if the long‐term application of single chemical herbicides would inevitably lead to increased weed populations and result in out‐of‐control weeds. The annual dynamics of weed seed bank responses to different weeding measures (chemical herbicide, hand weeding and no weeding) in rice–wheat cropping systems were compared to observe the succession of weed communities under different weed selection pressures for 17 years. RESULTS In unweeded...

Circular bio‐based production systems in the context of current biomass and fossil demand

Published: 20 January 2020

Author(s): Harriëtte L. Bos, Jan Broeze

Abstract In this article we explore the quantitative challenges posed by the intended circular biobased economy. To do this, we present the relative sizes, in terms of mass and energy, of the agro‐food and fossil production system, and the interrelations in the system of transformation to food, feed, materials, and energy. We deduce that the flows in the fossil system are of a comparable magnitude to the agricultural / biomass production in terms of mass and energy. This implies that replacing...

New entry to the enantioselective formation of substituted cyclohexenes bearing an all‐carbon quaternary stereogenic center

Published: 20 January 2020

Author(s): Keita Komine, Yasuhiro Urayama, Taku Hosaka, Hayato Fukuda, Susumi Hatakeyama, Jun Ishihara

Abstract Enantioselective formation of cyclohexene derivatives bearing an all‐carbon quaternary stereogenic center is described. The racemic cyclohexenes are readily transformed to chiral substituted cyclohexenes in good yield with excellent enantioselectivity and diastereoselectivity by a palladium‐mediated deracemization. The resulting products are promising synthetic intermediates of biologically active natural products. This protocol provides us with a new entry to the concise and scalable...

Enhanced dielectric properties of sandwich‐structured biaxially oriented polypropylene by grafting hyper‐branched aromatic polyamide as surface layers

Published: 20 January 2020

Author(s): Chengcheng Han, Xianhong Zhang, Dong Chen, Yuhong Ma, Changwen Zhao, Wantai Yang

Abstract This work represents multilayer films with sandwich structure by grafting hyper‐branched aromatic polyamide (HBP) on both sides of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) (HBPBOPPHBP). BOPP serves as the middle layer to offer high breakdown strength and HBP acts as surface layers to boost the dielectric constant. As a result, the dielectric constant increases significantly from 2.2 of control BOPP to 5.5 (almost increased 1.5 times) after grafting 2.06 μm HBP surface layers, while...

Effects of dual‐crosslinking networks on shape memory performance of polynorbornene

Published: 20 January 2020

Author(s): Xiaowen Gong, Hao Yin, Maolin Zhang, Xinyan Shi

ABSTRACT In this article, Polynorbornene (PNB)/Zinc dimethacrylate (ZDMA)/Dicumyl peroxide (DCP) composites can form dual‐crosslinking networks, which contain an ionic crosslinking network, and a part of the C─C covalent crosslinking network. DCP was used to initiate the polymerization of ZDMA to form ionic crosslinking bonds. With the increase of ZDMA, the total crosslink density (Vr) and ionic crosslink density (Vr2) increased. DCP was consumed in ZDMA polymerization, which made the PNB...
