The Nagoya Medals of Organic Chemistry have been awarded to E. W. “Bert” Meijer, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands (Gold Medal), and Hiroaki Suga, University of Tokyo, Japan (Silver Medal). The award is financially supported by the MSD Life Science Foundation.

The Gold Award is presented annually to a chemist who has made significant original contributions to the field of organic chemistry. The Silver Award goes to a young scientist based in Japan whose research has had a major impact on the field of synthetic organic chemistry.

Bert Meijer studied chemistry at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, where he received his Ph.D. in 1982. He then worked at Philips Research Laboratories, Eindhoven, and DSM Research, Geleen, The Netherlands, before joining the Eindhoven University of Technology as Professor of Organic Chemistry. Meijer’s research interest include self-assembled materials, the non-covalent synthesis of functional supramolecular systems, and functional supramolecular polymers.

Hiroaki Suga studied engineering at Okayama University, Japan, and chemistry at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA, where he received his Ph.D. in 1994. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow with Jack W. Szostak at MIT before joining the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, USA, as Assistant Professor in 1997. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2002. In 2003, Suga moved to the University of Tokyo, where he became Full Professor in 2005. His research interests include artificial ribozymes, genetic code reprogramming, the ribosomal synthesis of nonstandard peptides, and nonstandard peptide probes.
