The award is made annually to a distinguished young scientist for outstanding scientific achievements in the area of physical chemistry. The prize was awarded at the110th Bunsentagung, the annual German conference on Physical Chemistry, in Berlin, Germany.

Christian Eggeling studied physics at the University of Hamburg, Germany, and Georg-August University Göttingen, Germany. He went on to complete a PhD on using multi-dimensional single-molecule fluorescence spectroscopy to analyze photochemical kinetic and molecular dynamics at Georg-August University Göttingen. Since 2003, he has been researching fluorescence correlation spectroscopy at the nanoscale in the group of Professor Stefan W. Hell at the Max-Planck-Institute for Biophysical Chemistry.
